West Bengal Budget 2026: Focus on Development and Transparency

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee presented the state budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, describing it as a budget of development and legacy that covers every segment of society. The budget, tabled in the state assembly on Monday, outlines a comprehensive plan to boost infrastructure, social welfare, and employment.

One Lakh New Government Jobs Announced

One of the key highlights of the budget is the announcement of one lakh (100,000) new government jobs to be created this fiscal. The chief minister stated that no political person will be part of the appointment committees to ensure transparency in the recruitment process.

“We are committed to providing employment opportunities to the youth of Bengal. This budget will create one lakh new government jobs, and the recruitment process will be completely transparent and merit-based,” Banerjee said.

Budget Covers All Segments

The chief minister emphasized that the budget is inclusive and addresses the needs of all sections of society, including farmers, women, and the underprivileged. The budget allocates significant funds for agriculture, education, healthcare, and rural development.

According to the budget documents, the state government has set aside ₹10,000 crore for the agricultural sector, including subsidies and loan waivers. An additional ₹5,000 crore has been allocated for women’s empowerment schemes.

Opposition Reacts

Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized the budget, calling it a “political gimmick” ahead of the upcoming elections. He alleged that the job announcements are unrealistic and lack a concrete implementation plan.

“The budget is full of hollow promises. The government has failed to deliver on previous job guarantees, and this is just another attempt to fool the people,” Adhikari said.

Infrastructure and Legacy Projects

The budget also focuses on legacy projects, including the expansion of the Kolkata Metro, new flyovers, and rural road connectivity. The government has proposed a ₹15,000 crore outlay for infrastructure development.

Chief Minister Banerjee stated that the budget aims to create a lasting legacy for future generations. “We are building for the future. This budget will ensure that Bengal continues to progress and prosper,” she added.

Revenue and Fiscal Deficit

The state government estimates a revenue surplus of ₹2,500 crore for the fiscal year. The fiscal deficit is projected to be 3.5% of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), within the limits prescribed by the central government.

Tax revenue is expected to grow by 12% compared to the previous year, driven by improved compliance and economic recovery.

Reactions from Experts

Economists have welcomed the focus on job creation and infrastructure but expressed concerns about the feasibility of the revenue targets. “The budget is ambitious, but the government must ensure that the revenue projections are realistic and that the job creation plan is executed efficiently,” said a senior economist from the Indian Statistical Institute.
