Nagpur-based steel manufacturer Neco Group is making a strategic entry into the licensed arms market with its .22 bolt-action rifle, the Trek-22. The rifle has been designed by Neco Desert Tech, a joint venture between Neco Defence and US-based Desert Tech. It is available for purchase by private individuals who possess a valid license.
Domestic and International Applications
In India, the Trek-22 is intended for security and sporting purposes. For foreign markets, Neco is positioning the rifle as a suitable weapon for small-game hunters. The company has established a manufacturing facility in Nagpur, produced sample lots, and is now accepting orders. Domestic availability is expected shortly.
The .22 caliber is smaller and commonly used for private weapons in India, either as a hobby or for security. In the Vidarbha region, Neco becomes the second private player in this segment, following Tembo Defence, which plans to manufacture .45 caliber pistols in Amravati.
Joint Venture and Product Features
Neco Defence, a standalone company within the group, partnered with Desert Tech to form Neco Desert Tech for small-arms manufacturing. The Trek-22 rifle boasts a modern design and lighter weight, distinguishing it from traditional .22 rifles available in India, which typically feature extended barrels and long wooden muzzles and butts. Company sources claim this Made in India rifle is among the first indigenous weapons of its kind.
Future Product Line and Market Strategy
Beyond the Trek-22, Neco has developed a sniper rifle and an assault rifle. The company plans to target the domestic market through a bidding process, particularly for sniper rifles. The hard-target interdiction sniper, developed at the specific request of military customers for extreme-distance engagements against hard targets, is being marketed to military and police forces worldwide.
