Presidential Election Details
AAP councillor Dr. Ashwani Sharma proposed the name of Bahadur Singh for the President post. Eleven councillors, including Bahadur Singh and MLA Anmol Gagan Mann, raised their hands in support. Congress councillor Bharat Bhushan did not propose his name after seeing that Bahadur Singh had secured a clear majority.
According to reports, three out of the five Congress councillors voted in favor of Bahadur Singh during the election. Additionally, one independent councillor also supported him. Meanwhile, two Congress councillors, the sole BJP councillor, and three other independent councillors abstained from voting in favor of Bahadur Singh.
Vice Presidential Election
For the post of Vice President, Pardeep Rura proposed the name of independent councillor Shamma Kalia. This proposal was seconded by Dr. Ashwani Sharma. Ten councillors and MLA Anmol Gagan Mann raised their hands in support of Kalia.
President's Statement
After the election, President Bahadur Singh thanked everyone and said, “The development of the city without discrimination will be my priority. I will try to live up to the expectations of the citizens.”
Political Implications
The election highlighted a rift within the Congress camp, as three of its five councillors voted in favor of the AAP candidate. This cross-voting indicates internal divisions ahead of future municipal decisions.
