Restaurant Association Appeals to Government Over LPG Supply Concerns
The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has formally addressed Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, expressing urgent concerns regarding the uninterrupted supply of commercial LPG to restaurants across the country. This move comes amid growing apprehensions over potential supply disruptions that could cripple the food service sector.
Industry Warns of Severe Operational Impact
The industry body has issued a stark warning, stating that any shortage of commercial LPG cylinders or regulatory changes affecting their availability could severely impact restaurant operations. Such disruptions would not only affect business continuity but also disrupt food services for lakhs of citizens who depend on restaurants for their daily meals.
The concern follows recent government measures aimed at safeguarding domestic LPG supplies. Specifically, the booking interval for domestic LPG cylinders has been increased from 21 days to 25 days. This adjustment is intended to curb hoarding and ensure equitable distribution during global energy supply uncertainties.
Confusion Among Distributors and Food Businesses
Simultaneously, directives that prioritize LPG supply for household consumption have created significant confusion among distributors and food businesses. In its detailed letter, NRAI emphasized that the restaurant industry is heavily dependent on commercial LPG for daily kitchen operations. The association noted that any disruption in this essential supply could lead to widespread closure of restaurants, creating a cascade effect on employment and food security.
The industry body also stressed that food supply is an essential service, a point proven during the Covid-19 lockdowns when restaurants continued operations to ensure access to meals for people, particularly those dependent on outside food. This historical context underscores the critical role restaurants play in maintaining societal stability during crises.
Specific Regulatory Clause Causes Concern
NRAI pointed to a specific provision in the ministry's order which states that LPG supplied by public sector oil marketing companies should be marketed only to domestic consumers. According to the association, this clause has led some LPG suppliers to interpret the order as a restriction on commercial cylinder supply. This misinterpretation threatens to create artificial shortages and operational bottlenecks for restaurants that rely on consistent LPG availability.
The restaurant industry, which represents over five lakh establishments across India, has formally requested the ministry to clarify the order and ensure continued supply of commercial LPG cylinders. This clarification is essential so that restaurants can maintain uninterrupted services and continue serving the public without disruption.

Industry stakeholders have unanimously emphasized that a clear directive from the government will help prevent supply disruptions.
