Restaurant Body Demands Urgent Government Action on LPG Supply Crisis
The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has made an urgent appeal to the central government to "immediately restore" uninterrupted supply of commercial LPG cylinders and officially classify the restaurant industry as part of "essential services". This critical demand comes as eateries across the nation face severe operational challenges due to widespread disruptions in commercial LPG availability.
Ground Reality Contradicts Government Clarifications
In a letter dated March 10 addressed to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the NRAI highlighted that although the Centre has publicly clarified there is no ban on supplying commercial LPG cylinders to restaurants, the actual situation on the ground tells a different story. "Suppliers have expressed inability," the association stated in its communication, pointing to a significant gap between policy statements and practical implementation.
Distributor Federation's Controversial Classification
The crisis stems from instructions circulated on March 9 by the All India LPG Distributors Federation (AILPGDF), which categorised restaurants as "non-essential commercial establishments". Following this classification, distributors across multiple states allegedly stopped delivery to restaurants, creating what NRAI describes as an industry-wide crisis that threatens food supply chains nationwide.
NRAI Gurgaon president Joy Singh confirmed that a letter dated March 9 was circulated to all distributors by AILPGDF, which wrongly categorised the restaurant industry as non-essential. Singh noted that while major restaurants in Gurgaon are connected to PNG supply and might not be immediately affected, "there are many other standalone and small units, which may be affected" by the commercial LPG disruption.
Restaurant Industry Leadership Sounds Alarm
The NRAI leadership, including president Sagar Daryani, vice-presidents Zorawar Kalra and Pranav Rungta, and secretary general Prakul Kumar, emphasized that the stoppage of commercial LPG has left "thousands of restaurants struggling to operate normal kitchens". They pointed out that the restaurant industry continues to face tough challenges in maintaining operations and has requested an urgent meeting with government officials to address the escalating crisis.
Historical Precedent and Current Imperative
Stressing that food supply represents an "inescapable service" to citizens, the association recalled that restaurants and food-delivery infrastructure were officially classified as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. This historical recognition underscores the critical role restaurants play in national food security and public welfare.
The NRAI has formally requested both state and central governments to issue a clarification regarding the supply of commercial LPG for the restaurant industry as an essential service. The association argues that sustained supply of commercial LPG will ensure that "food to citizens is not disrupted", particularly during times of broader economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
