NTPC's Pakri-Barwadih Mine Commences Operations in Jharkhand
Mining operations have officially begun at the Pakri-Barwadih (North-West) captive mine project (CMP) located in Jharkhand, marking a significant development for India's energy sector. NTPC Mining Limited (NML), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, announced that the commercial operation date for this critical project took effect from April 1, coinciding with the start of the new fiscal year.
Strengthening India's Coal Supply Chain
In an official statement, NML emphasized that this new operational capacity enhances its growing portfolio and significantly strengthens the public sector undertaking's ability to meet India's escalating coal demand. The commencement of mining at Pakri-Barwadih represents a strategic move to bolster domestic coal production, reducing reliance on imports and supporting the nation's energy security framework.
Record-Breaking Production Achievements
Simultaneously, NTPC Mining Limited reported record coal production for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The company achieved an annual coal output of 44.16 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT), which reflects a substantial growth of 5.1% compared to the previous year. Notably, this performance successfully surpassed the production target set by the Government of India, underscoring NML's operational efficiency and commitment to national energy goals.
Strategic Restructuring and Asset Transfer
The start of the new fiscal year on April 1 also marked a pivotal organizational restructuring. All mining assets of NTPC Limited were formally transferred to NML, establishing the subsidiary as a full-fledged, dedicated mining entity. This consolidation is expected to streamline operations, enhance focus on core mining activities, and drive further growth in coal production capacity.
The Pakri-Barwadih mine's operational launch, combined with NML's record production figures, positions the company as a key player in India's energy landscape, contributing to sustainable development and meeting the nation's industrial and power generation needs.
