Nashik Onion Farmers Stage Agitation Over Plummeting Prices, Demand Government Intervention

Onion farmers in Nashik district staged a significant protest on Monday, gathering at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) office in Chandwad to voice their frustration over the continuous decline in wholesale onion prices. The agitation, which saw some participants embarking on a hunger strike, highlighted the severe financial distress faced by cultivators as market rates fall below production costs.

Key Demands of the Protesting Farmers

The farmers presented a clear set of demands to address their economic hardships:

  • Minimum Support Price (MSP): They are seeking an MSP of Rs 3,000 per quintal for onions to ensure a baseline income.
  • Financial Grant: A grant of Rs 1,500 per quintal is requested for farmers who sold their produce below the cost of production over the past six months.
  • Export Incentives: Additional incentives to boost onion exports, aiming to stabilize prices and expand market access.

Sharp Decline in Onion Prices

According to APMC officials, the average wholesale onion price has experienced a dramatic drop, falling from approximately Rs 1,500 per quintal three weeks ago to around Rs 1,000 per quintal currently. The price range varies significantly, with minimum prices as low as Rs 500 per quintal and maximum prices reaching up to Rs 1,300 per quintal.

Bharat Dighole, president of the Maharashtra State Onion Farmers Association, emphasized the gravity of the situation. "The cost of producing onions is around Rs 1,800 per quintal," he stated. "With average wholesale prices consistently below this threshold, farmers are incurring heavy financial losses and are unable to recover even their basic production costs. This unsustainable scenario necessitates immediate government intervention, including the proposed grant."

Market Dynamics and Farmer Vulnerabilities

The current market conditions are particularly challenging due to the nature of the onion crop. The arrivals at APMCs in the district consist of late kharif onions, which have a limited shelf life of less than a month. This urgency forces farmers to sell their produce at prevailing market rates, regardless of profitability, leaving them with little bargaining power.

At Lasalgaon APMC, a key market in the region, onion arrivals have surged in recent days, ranging between 25,000 to 30,000 quintals daily. On Monday, the average wholesale price was recorded at Rs 1,100 per quintal, with minimum and maximum prices at Rs 500 and Rs 1,372 per quintal, respectively. A total of 30,814 quintals of onions were auctioned that day, underscoring the high volume of trade amid declining values.

The protest underscores a critical issue in India's agricultural sector, where price volatility and inadequate support mechanisms threaten the livelihoods of farmers. As the agitation continues, stakeholders await government responses to mitigate the crisis and ensure fair compensation for onion cultivators in Maharashtra.
