Major Boost for Jharkhand as Patratu Power Plant Commences Operations
In a significant development for Jharkhand's energy sector, Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL) has initiated substantial power supply to the state from its new supercritical thermal power plant in Ramgarh district. The first unit of the massive project has begun commercial operations, marking a crucial milestone.
Project Details and Power Generation
The inaugural 800 MW unit, which forms part of the initial phase of the 4,000 MW supercritical thermal power project (STPP), started its commercial journey at midnight on November 5. According to PVUNL's chief executive officer A K Sehgal, the unit is currently generating approximately 80% of its installed capacity, delivering nearly 540 MW to Jharkhand.
This achievement represents the first step in a two-phase development plan with an estimated total investment of Rs 20,300 crore. The first unit alone required an investment of approximately Rs 9,000 crore to establish. The project timeline indicates that unit-2 of identical capacity is scheduled for commissioning by March 2026, while unit-3 is expected to become operational in the subsequent fiscal year.
Joint Venture Structure and Technological Advancements
PVUNL operates as a joint venture between two significant entities: National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) holding a 74% stake and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) maintaining 26% ownership. The power distribution agreement ensures that 85% of the generated electricity is allocated to JBVNL for state consumption, while the remaining 15% is directed to the Union government.
The power plant incorporates cutting-edge technology designed for optimal efficiency and environmental responsibility. It features air-cooled condensers that significantly reduce water consumption and implements 100% dry ash technology that enables complete productive utilization of ash byproducts.
The company, established in October 2015 across 1,334 acres in Patratu, represents a modernization of energy infrastructure in the region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this ambitious project on May 25, 2018, transforming the assets of the previously struggling Patratu Thermal Power Station that originally began operations in 1962.
Future Plans and Community Development
Looking ahead, Ziaur Rehman, PVUNL's head of human resources, confirmed that the Banhadi coal block spanning 1,818 hectares in Latehar district will commence coal production in the upcoming fiscal year. The company has already secured a Rs 3,300 crore loan agreement to facilitate coal supply, though the plant currently sources its coal requirements from Central Coalfields Limited (CCL).
Beyond power generation, PVUNL has demonstrated commitment to regional development through various community initiatives. Programs focusing on education, healthcare, skill development, women empowerment, infrastructure, and drinking water totaling Rs 21.65 crore have been successfully completed. Additional schemes worth Rs 14.33 crore are currently underway, with future plans allocating another Rs 11 crore for community welfare projects.
This comprehensive approach positions the Patratu power project as not merely an energy solution but a catalyst for broader regional development in Jharkhand.
