Podanur Train Users Association Urges New Railway Line to Karur for Enhanced Industrial Connectivity
Coimbatore: The Podanur Train Users Association has formally urged the Salem division of Southern Railway to establish a new railway line connecting Podanur and Karur via Chettipalayam, Palladam, Kangeyam, and Vellakoil. This proposal aims to address the critical lack of a dedicated railway corridor in a region known for its significant industrial and agricultural activities.
Addressing Industrial and Freight Needs
Highlighting that Chettipalayam and its surrounding areas are major hubs for textile units, poultry farms, animal and poultry feed production, and agricultural trade, the association emphasized the urgent need for improved rail infrastructure. N Subrmanian, general secretary of the association and a member of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee, stated, "Large volumes of goods are being transported to various districts and other states from these units. The proposed rail route will significantly improve freight movement, strengthen industrial connectivity, and support robust economic growth in the region."
He further noted that many multinational companies have established warehouses at Chettipalayam, underscoring the area's strategic importance. Currently, traders and regular commuters from Palladam or Chettipalayam must travel to Erode to access train services to Karur, a situation that the new track aims to rectify by providing direct connectivity.
Benefits Beyond Freight: Passenger Revenue and Land Acquisition
Subrmanian explained that the new railway line would not only cater to freight movement but also enhance revenue through increased passenger footfall. He pointed out that an existing track runs between Podanur Junction and Chettipalayam, leading to Pollachi, which could simplify land acquisition for the new line, making the project more feasible.
However, he highlighted a key challenge: while Indian Railways has approved the formation of new routes, including the Erode-Palani and Madurai-Thoothukudi lines, funds have yet to be allocated for project implementation. This funding gap remains a critical hurdle in advancing such infrastructure developments.
