Prayagraj Faces LPG Supply Crisis as Distributors Demand Immediate Action

In Prayagraj, a significant crisis has emerged as LPG distributors are urgently calling for an increase in cooking gas supplies to address a growing backlog of deliveries. This demand comes despite repeated assurances from oil marketing companies that the situation is under control, highlighting a stark disconnect between official statements and ground reality.

Mounting Backlog and Consumer Frustration

The Sangam city, home to approximately 14 lakh LPG consumers including 5 lakh in urban areas, is grappling with severe supply chain issues. Distributors report that with consumers booking cylinders both online and offline, data is piling up rapidly, creating a backlog across all 144 gas agencies in the region. A distributor, who requested anonymity, revealed to TOI, "It will take at least two weeks to clear the backlog if the supply chain is maintained daily. We have been requesting oil companies and the administration to take corrective measures, but the response has been inadequate."

Regulations limiting consumer bookings to once every 25 days have exacerbated the problem, raising serious concerns and leading to unruly scenes at agencies. A consumer from Dariyabad expressed frustration, stating, "If there is no shortage, as officials claim, why are there such restrictive measures? After booking a cylinder last week, we are still waiting for delivery, which contradicts the assurances we've been given."

Root Causes and Escalating Tensions

Distributors attribute the current crisis to earlier suspensions of booking channels for three to four days, which created a surge in pending bookings and further aggravated the situation. This has left distributors facing increased public pressure without sufficient supply or support, as deliveries from bottling plants continue to fall short of meeting existing demand.

A distributor from the old city area detailed the challenges, saying, "LPG distributors are dealing with mounting backlogs and inadequate supply. The shortage of gas cylinders has left the public struggling, with long waiting times causing widespread frustration. The gap between assurances and actual delivery is eroding consumers' trust, and customers are venting their anger on distributors, leading to frequent disputes, even though the fault lies elsewhere."

The situation has become so dire that customers are arriving at agencies as early as the morning, queuing up long before most agencies open at 10 am, in hopes of securing their cylinders.

Broader Implications and Call for Solutions

This LPG supply crisis in Prayagraj not only affects daily life for millions but also raises questions about the efficiency of supply chain management by oil marketing companies. Distributors emphasize that without immediate intervention to boost supplies, the backlog will continue to grow, potentially leading to more severe public unrest and economic disruptions.

The ongoing issue underscores the need for transparent communication and proactive measures from authorities to restore normalcy and rebuild consumer confidence in the LPG distribution system.
