Prayagraj Metrolite Project Gains Momentum with Depot Site Finalization
In a significant development for urban infrastructure, the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) has finalized a plot at Cheoki (Naini) for the depot of the second route in the Metrolite project. This move marks a crucial step forward in the ambitious public transport initiative aimed at transforming connectivity in the rapidly growing city.
Strategic Shift in Depot Location to Accelerate Execution
The authority has identified land belonging to a closed private company along Mirzapur Road for the facility, abandoning an earlier proposal to build the depot on Army land in the Chheoki area. This strategic decision was made to avoid procedural complications associated with defence land and ensure faster project execution. PDA officials have already conducted a thorough site inspection and completed land demarcation, effectively clearing a key hurdle in the project's progress.
Comprehensive Metrolite Network to Span 44 Kilometers
Under the proposed urban transit plan, the Metrolite system will operate across an extensive 44-kilometer network throughout Prayagraj, featuring 39 stations and two dedicated depots for maintenance and operational purposes. While one depot has been planned in the Jhunsi area near Kanhihar Lake City, the newly finalized site at Cheoki will serve the second corridor, enhancing the system's efficiency and coverage.
Depot Infrastructure and Corridor Connectivity
Each depot will be developed over 14 hectares to accommodate essential facilities, including train maintenance areas, stabling lines, and operational infrastructure. The Metrolite network is designed on two primary corridors:
- Bamrauli to City Lake Jhunsi
- Shantipuram to Chheoki
These routes are strategically planned to connect major residential, institutional, and commercial pockets of the city, with several halts located at key localities along the way. The Parade Ground has been proposed as the central interchange station, linking both routes to facilitate seamless travel across Prayagraj.
Project Impact and Economic Significance
Estimated to cost over Rs 12,000 crore, the Metrolite project is expected to significantly improve public transport connectivity and alleviate traffic pressure in the expanding urban landscape.
