Private Electric Bus Set to Roll in Mangaluru, Posing Challenge to KSRTC's Green Initiative
As the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) gears up to deploy 100 electric buses across Dakshina Kannada, private bus operators are swiftly entering the eco-friendly fray, aiming to provide stiff competition to the state-run entity. In a significant development, a private electric bus is scheduled to commence operations on Route No. 27, originating from the historic Mangaladevi Temple in Mangaluru, within the coming week.
Private Operators Embrace Electric Mobility
Bus owners in the region have expressed strong interest in transitioning to electric vehicles, with plans to gradually phase out diesel-powered buses in favor of cleaner, more sustainable alternatives. This move aligns with broader environmental goals and reflects a growing trend toward carbon neutrality in public transport.
The KSRTC Mangaluru division is actively developing detailed roadmaps to operationalize the 100 electric buses allocated under the central government's PM-eBus Sewa scheme. This initiative aims to enhance urban mobility while reducing carbon emissions, but private operators are not far behind in adopting similar green technologies.
Launch Details and Future Plans
Dilraj Alva, a prominent bus owner and former president of the Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners' Association, announced that he will officially launch the new electric bus on Route No. 27 on February 26. "The manufacturer will deliver the vehicle in a couple of days. I decided to operate the bus in the city, and it is an eco-friendly initiative to promote carbon neutrality," Alva stated, emphasizing his commitment to environmental stewardship.
Initially, the electric bus will utilize existing charging infrastructure in Mangaluru, ensuring a smooth integration into the city's transport network. Alva, known for his involvement in various cleanliness drives, revealed ambitious plans to expand electric bus services through collaborative efforts.
Strategic Investments and Environmental Focus
Alva highlighted that his primary motivation is environmental contribution rather than immediate cost calculations. "I did not calculate the cost effectiveness of operating an electric bus at this point. My priority is to contribute to the environment by reducing carbon emissions," he explained.
To scale up this green initiative, Alva and four other bus operators have formed a group that established Charge Mobility Private Limited. This company is poised to explore diverse opportunities for introducing additional eco-friendly vehicles in the future, potentially transforming Mangaluru's public transport landscape.
The emergence of private electric buses in Mangaluru signals a competitive yet collaborative push toward sustainable mobility, with both KSRTC and private operators playing pivotal roles in reducing the carbon footprint of Dakshina Kannada's transportation sector.
