Pune's IT Hub Set for Major Infrastructure Overhaul

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has unveiled a significant plan to construct a dedicated freeway in Hinjewadi, aiming to permanently resolve the persistent traffic congestion plaguing Pune's premier Information Technology hub. This ambitious infrastructure project will be developed following the model of the successful Mumbai-Bengaluru bypass.

Immediate Repairs and Long-Term Solution

In a two-phase approach to address both immediate concerns and long-term needs, PMRDA will first ensure all existing roads in the area are repaired by December 5, 2025. Following this urgent repair work, the authority will accelerate the development of the new freeway infrastructure.

The decision comes after a difficult period for Hinjewadi, which has experienced multiple challenges including fatal road accidents due to chaotic traffic conditions and severe flash flooding during the recent monsoon season. These incidents have caused significant hardship for daily commuters and residents.

Project Scope and Strategic Planning

Yogesh Mhase, Metropolitan Commissioner of PMRDA, provided specific details about the proposal. "PMRDA would submit a proposal to acquire land for the construction of on-ground and elevated road from Hinjewadi Phase 1 to Hinjewadi Phase 3 on the state highway from Hinjewadi to Ghotawade via Pirangut," Mhase stated.

In a coordinated effort, the agency currently constructing Metro Line 3 from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar has received directives to repair all damaged roads beneath the elevated Metro structure. Once completed, these roads will be handed over to the Maharashtra Industries and Development Corporation (MIDC) for maintenance.

Comprehensive Safety and Flood Prevention Measures

To enhance road safety and reduce accidents, PMRDA has committed to installing modern traffic signals and comprehensive CCTV surveillance across the area's road network. An officer from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) highlighted additional priorities, noting that "construction of underpasses and service roads on the Mumbai-Bengaluru bypass will be given priority to ease the traffic flow in the area near Hinjewadi."

Addressing the monsoon-related issues, PMRDA is also developing an action plan to prevent future flash floods, based on a detailed survey report of natural streams in the region. This multi-pronged approach demonstrates the authority's comprehensive strategy to tackle both traffic and environmental challenges.

Broader Infrastructure Development Across Pune

The infrastructure push extends beyond Hinjewadi. PMRDA, in collaboration with NHAI, has already begun widening an 850-meter-long and 18-meter-wide road section near Bhugaon on the Pune-Kolad highway. Additionally, the authority plans to expedite construction of a bypass on the Pune-Ahilyanagar Road from Kharadi to Bakori Road via Kesnand.

Officials confirmed that road improvement projects are also scheduled for Shikrapur and Wagholi, areas that have similarly been experiencing significant traffic congestion, indicating a broader regional infrastructure upgrade initiative across Pune's metropolitan region.
