Punjab Chief Minister Extends Invitation to Global Chipmaker for Mohali R&D Centre
In a significant move to bolster Punjab's technological landscape, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has formally invited global semiconductor leader NXP Semiconductors to establish a state-of-the-art research and development centre in Mohali. The invitation was extended during Mann's diplomatic visit to the Netherlands, where he engaged in high-level discussions with NXP executives.
Strategic Meeting with NXP Leadership
During his European visit, Chief Minister Mann held a productive meeting with Maurice Geraets, Executive Director and Country Manager of NXP Semiconductors, alongside Dr. Ankit Pal, Head of Public Policy. The discussions centered on potential collaborations in semiconductor design, advanced electronics, and the development of innovation-driven ecosystems within Punjab.
"Mohali is being considered as a potential location, leveraging the state's strong talent pool and growing electronics ecosystem," Mann stated, emphasizing the strategic advantages of the proposed location.
Vision for a Silicon Valley-Like Ecosystem
The Chief Minister outlined ambitious plans to transform Kalkat Bhawan in Mohali into a dynamic innovation hub reminiscent of Silicon Valley. This proposed centre, strategically positioned near the international airport and IT City, aims to create a vibrant environment for technological advancement and entrepreneurship.
Mann highlighted several key initiatives under consideration:
- Collaboration on sophisticated system design solutions
- Implementation of the NXP Startup Challenge Programme in partnership with Startup Punjab
- Development of support mechanisms for innovation and emerging startups
Punjab's Competitive Advantages
The Chief Minister presented compelling arguments for NXP's investment in Punjab, emphasizing the state's unique strengths:
- Robust Automotive Sector: Punjab's established automotive and auto-component manufacturing base presents significant opportunities for developing solutions in near-field communication, advanced driver assistance systems, and secure connectivity technologies.
- Academic Excellence: The state's proximity to premier educational institutions ensures a continuous pipeline of skilled talent. These include IIT Ropar, ISB Mohali, Plaksha University, Punjab Engineering College, and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology.
- Policy Support: Mann highlighted the Industrial and Business Development Policy 2026, which specifically identifies electronics and semiconductors as priority sectors for investment and development.
Government's Proactive Investment Strategy
Chief Minister Mann revealed that his administration is actively engaging with global corporations to attract substantial investments in priority sectors. "The government was engaging global firms to attract investments in priority sectors," he confirmed during the discussions.
In a concluding gesture, Mann extended a formal invitation to NXP's leadership to visit Punjab and witness firsthand the state's readiness for technological collaboration and investment.
