In a significant move to transform rail connectivity, the South East Central Railway (SECR) has identified Raipur for major infrastructure upgrades as part of Indian Railways' ambitious goal to double train originating capacity by 2030. The centerpiece of this plan is a new coaching terminal at Kendri in Nava Raipur, designed to decongest the existing Raipur Junction and facilitate new train services.
Addressing Congestion with a New Hub
Raipur Junction, situated on the crucial Bilaspur–Nagpur corridor, is one of the busiest hubs in the SECR zone. It currently manages approximately 122 coaching trains daily, comprising 76 mail/express and 46 passenger services. Despite having seven platforms, capacity constraints force about 14 trains originating from Raipur to be operated via Durg. The proposed terminal at Kendri aims to resolve this bottleneck decisively.
The new facility is planned to feature nine platforms—including one home platform and four island platforms. It will be supported by five pit lines, five stabling lines, four intermediate overhauling lines, four mechanical lines, and three shunting necks. This comprehensive setup will enable efficient maintenance, smoother train movements, and a substantial increase in operational capacity.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Overhaul
Parallel to the terminal development, significant works are progressing on the Bilaspur–Nagpur section. A fourth rail line is under construction in the Raipur region to enhance speed and reliability. The installation of automatic signalling systems is also underway to improve safety, punctuality, and line capacity.
Further strengthening the network, a double rail line between Kharsia and Parmalkasa is being built, which will pass through Nava Raipur. This will augment sectional capacity and improve connectivity for the capital region and nearby districts. Simultaneously, Raipur Junction itself is undergoing a Rs 456 crore redevelopment focused on modernising passenger amenities, station buildings, and circulation areas.
Economic and Passenger Benefits
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai welcomed the decision, stating that doubling capacity will lead to more trains, better frequency, and reduced crowding. He emphasized that it will provide new momentum to connectivity, trade, industry, and tourism in the state.
The Railways' strategy to achieve capacity doubling by 2030 involves a multi-pronged approach: constructing additional platforms and lines, developing new terminals, upgrading signalling, modernising yards, and establishing mega coaching complexes. Currently, railway projects worth nearly Rs 41,000 crore are in progress across Chhattisgarh, encompassing line doubling, new corridors, flyovers, and bridges.
These concerted efforts mark a transformative phase for rail infrastructure in Chhattisgarh, promising enhanced travel experience for passengers and a robust boost to the state's economic landscape.
