Ranchi Vendors Turn to Modified Kerosene Stoves as LPG Supply Crisis Deepens
In a stark reflection of the ongoing LPG shortage gripping the region, numerous roadside food vendors across key areas of Ranchi have resorted to converting small 5 kg LPG cylinders into makeshift stoves that operate on kerosene or diesel. This unconventional adaptation has emerged as a survival tactic amid persistent supply uncertainties, sparking a mix of concern and curiosity among local customers.
Desperate Measures for Business Survival
Vendors operating along Kutchery Road, Karamtoli, Lalpur, and Doranda have openly admitted that this shift is a desperate response to keep their livelihoods afloat. With LPG refills becoming increasingly unreliable—often delayed for days or entirely unavailable—these improvised setups offer a more accessible and cost-effective alternative. Ramesh Shaw, a roadside food vendor at Kutchery Road, explained the dire situation: "We have no choice. LPG cylinders are either unavailable or delayed for days. This stove allows us to use kerosene, which costs less and is easier to obtain. If we shut shop, we lose our only source of income."
Echoing similar sentiments, Sunita Devi, a vendor from Firayalal Chowk, highlighted the critical need for continuous cooking to sustain daily sales. "Daily sales depend on continuous cooking. With LPG supply disrupted, this alternative has helped us survive, even if it’s not ideal," she stated, underscoring the precarious balance between safety and economic necessity.
Safety Concerns Loom in Crowded Markets
While vendors emphasize the practicality of these modified stoves, customers and passers-by have voiced significant safety apprehensions. The use of such setups in densely populated market areas raises alarms about potential hazards. Amit Kumar, a local resident, expressed his worries: "These set-ups look unsafe and risky, especially with so many people around. One small accident can be dangerous." This sentiment reflects broader community fears regarding fire risks and accidents in crowded urban spaces.
The makeshift stoves, though a temporary solution, highlight deeper systemic issues in LPG distribution and accessibility. As vendors navigate this crisis, the situation underscores the urgent need for reliable energy sources to support small-scale businesses and ensure public safety in Ranchi's bustling food markets.
