Cabinet Greenlights Major Railway Expansion Projects Worth Rs 24,815 Crore
The Union Cabinet, in a significant move to enhance India's rail infrastructure, has given its approval to two crucial multi-tracking projects for Indian Railways. The total investment for these initiatives stands at a substantial Rs 24,815 crore. These projects are strategically designed to address capacity constraints and improve connectivity in key regions of the country.
Expanding the Rail Network by 601 Kilometers
The approved projects will collectively add approximately 601 kilometers to the existing railway network. This expansion spans across 15 districts in two major states: Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. The development is expected to significantly boost the operational efficiency and capacity of Indian Railways, catering to growing passenger and freight demands.
Details of the Two Key Projects
Ghaziabad-Sitapur 3rd and 4th Lines (Uttar Pradesh): This project involves the construction of 403 kilometers of new railway lines. Railway and Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the Ghaziabad-Sitapur section is one of the most congested railway corridors in India. The addition of third and fourth lines is aimed at alleviating this congestion and enhancing traffic flow.
Rajahmundry-Visakhapatnam 3rd and 4th Lines (Andhra Pradesh): This initiative will see the development of 198 kilometers of new tracks. Similar to the Uttar Pradesh project, it focuses on increasing line capacity to support smoother and more reliable rail services in the region.
Strategic Alignment and Construction Approach
Minister Vaishnaw explained that the alignment of the new tracks will primarily follow the existing railway network. However, in certain areas, new lines will be laid to bypass congested cities. This strategic approach minimizes land acquisition issues and environmental impact while maximizing efficiency. The bypasses are intended to reduce travel times and improve the overall reliability of rail operations.
