Indigenous Steel from SAIL Fuels Indian Navy's New Stealth Frigate

India's defence manufacturing sector has received a substantial enhancement with the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) supplying domestically produced special steel for the advanced stealth frigate INS Taragiri. The warship was officially commissioned into the Indian Navy on April 3, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the nation's maritime capabilities.

Symbol of Strategic Strength and Confidence

Constructed entirely using indigenous steel from SAIL, the INS Taragiri stands as a powerful symbol of India's growing strategic strength and self-reliance in defence production. The frigate represents a major achievement in the country's efforts to bolster its naval forces with homegrown technology and materials.

Massive Steel Contribution from SAIL Plants

The advanced frigate, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, incorporates an impressive total of nearly 4,000 tonnes of special-grade steel plates. These critical materials were produced across multiple SAIL facilities, including:

  • Rourkela Steel Plant

Among these facilities, the Bokaro Steel Plant played an exceptionally pivotal role in the project. BSL supplied a significant portion of the special steel required for the warship, demonstrating its robust production capabilities and adherence to stringent quality standards essential for naval applications.

Bokaro's Consistent Contribution to National Defence

According to Manikant Dhan, Chief of Communication at Bokaro Steel Plant, this achievement continues a proud tradition of defence contributions. "This is not the first instance where Bokaro has made substantial contributions to the nation's defence infrastructure," Dhan emphasized.

The plant has previously supplied specialized steel for several other important warships, including:

  1. INS Vikrant - India's first indigenous aircraft carrier
  2. INS Vindhyagiri - A stealth frigate in the Nilgiri class
  3. INS Nilgiri - The lead ship of the Project 17A frigates
  4. INS Surat - A guided missile destroyer

The successful deployment of SAIL's indigenous steel in the INS Taragiri underscores India's technological advancement in defence manufacturing. This development not only enhances the Indian Navy's operational capabilities but also reinforces the country's commitment to self-sufficiency in critical defence materials, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthening national security infrastructure.
