Samruddhi Expressway Records Dramatic 57% Traffic Increase in FY 2025-26
The Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway has experienced a remarkable surge in traffic during the 2025-26 financial year, according to official data from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation. The access-controlled highway witnessed substantial growth in both vehicular movement and toll revenue, highlighting its growing importance as a key transportation corridor.
Traffic and Revenue Figures Show Significant Growth
Between April 2025 and March 2026, approximately 1.6 crore vehicles utilized the expressway, representing an increase of around 57.4 lakh vehicles compared to the previous year's 1.05 crore. This substantial 57% growth in traffic volume demonstrates the expressway's rapid adoption by commuters and commercial operators.
Toll collection during this period reached an impressive Rs 1,240.04 crore, which is over Rs 495 crore higher than the previous fiscal year. The MSRDC records reveal a consistent upward trend in both traffic and revenue since the highway first opened to traffic in December 2022.
Expressway Specifications and Development Impact
The 701-kilometer Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, developed by MSRDC, is designed for speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour. Passing through 10 districts, this infrastructure project forms a crucial component of Maharashtra's broader plan to enhance logistics efficiency across the state.
One of the expressway's most significant achievements has been reducing travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from approximately 16 hours to nearly 8 hours. Officials attribute the recent traffic surge primarily to this substantial time saving, with the expressway emerging as the preferred route despite ongoing concerns about accidents along certain sections.
Historical Growth Patterns Since Inauguration
The expressway's growth trajectory has been consistently positive since its opening. During the initial four months of operation, approximately 14.3 lakh vehicles used the highway, generating toll revenue of Rs 106.4 crore. This figure rose significantly to 72.5 lakh vehicles in 2023, followed by crossing the 1.05 crore vehicle mark in 2024 with toll revenue exceeding Rs 740 crore.
The latest data for 2025-26 continues this upward trend, with both vehicle count and revenue reaching new heights. Industry stakeholders confirm that the expressway is increasingly being utilized for freight movement, transforming regional logistics patterns.
Industry Perspectives and Operational Challenges
Industrialist Ram Bhogle noted that nearly 80% of industrial transport has shifted to the Samruddhi corridor over the past year. He emphasized that smoother traffic flow at critical junctions like Bhiwandi and Thane could further accelerate cargo movement into Mumbai.
"If congestion bottlenecks are addressed, the expressway's usage will rise further, especially once it connects seamlessly to ports and extends toward Gujarat," Bhogle stated, highlighting the infrastructure's potential for future expansion and integration.
However, transporters have identified significant operational challenges. Fayyaz Khan pointed to last-mile connectivity issues, noting that congestion in Bhiwandi often delays entry into Mumbai by two to three hours, sometimes extending beyond three-and-a-half hours.
"Easing this choke point will significantly improve efficiency for goods carriers," Khan emphasized, underscoring the need for infrastructure improvements at critical access points.
Future Development and Government Response
Industrial bodies across Maharashtra are advocating for better link roads connecting the expressway to major industrial hubs. These improved connections would facilitate faster movement of both manufactured goods and agricultural produce to Mumbai markets.
The state government has indicated a positive approach to these demands, with development plans expected to further enhance the expressway's efficiency. These improvements could potentially boost economic activity along the corridor while addressing current operational bottlenecks.
The Samruddhi Expressway's growing traffic and revenue figures demonstrate its successful integration into Maharashtra's transportation network, though challenges remain in optimizing its full potential for both passenger and freight movement across the region.
