Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi Urges Diamond Traders to Make Surat Bourse Global Hub

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Saturday made a strong appeal to diamond traders, urging them to begin their operations from the Surat Diamond Bourse and work collectively towards developing it as a premier global hub for both rough and lab-grown diamond trading. Addressing a gathering of traders at an event held at the bourse, Sanghavi emphasized the city's pivotal role in the diamond industry and its untapped potential.

Surat's Strategic Position in Diamond Polishing

"If the city is polishing most of the rough diamonds, there is no reason why rough sellers cannot come here to sell their products," Sanghavi stated, highlighting Surat's dominance in diamond polishing. He pointed out that with Surat processing a significant portion of the world's rough diamonds, it logically follows that the city should also become a central marketplace for rough diamond sales, thereby capturing more value within the local economy.

Infrastructure and Connectivity Improvements Needed

Sanghavi also underscored the necessity for enhanced facilities at the Surat Diamond Bourse complex to support its growth as a global trading center. He called for affordable food services specifically for brokers and improved public transport connectivity to ensure seamless access for all stakeholders. According to his remarks, approximately 3,200 people currently visit the bourse on a daily basis, indicating substantial foot traffic that requires robust infrastructure.

In a positive development, Sanghavi noted that bus connectivity from Navsari has already been initiated, which is a step towards better regional integration. However, he stressed that further improvements in transportation and amenities are crucial to attract international traders and compete with established hubs.

Industry Support and Global Potential

Echoing Sanghavi's vision, Kirit Bhansali, Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), expressed confidence in Surat's potential to emerge as a major rough diamond trading hub. Bhansali emphasized that with focused efforts from both the industry and government, Surat could replicate the success of global centers like Dubai, which grew into dominant trading hubs through strategic enabling factors.

Bhansali highlighted key areas such as regulatory support, advanced logistics, and international partnerships as critical components for Surat's ascent in the global diamond market. The collective push from political leadership and industry experts signals a concerted effort to elevate Surat's status beyond just a polishing center to a comprehensive trading destination.

The event served as a rallying call for diamond traders to leverage the Surat Diamond Bourse's infrastructure and contribute to its transformation into a world-class hub. With ongoing initiatives and proposed enhancements, Surat aims to strengthen its position in the global diamond trade, fostering economic growth and creating new opportunities in the region.
