Surat Diamond Bourse Hosts Major Meeting for Light Brown Diamond Traders

A significant gathering of diamond traders specializing in Light Brown (LB) quality diamonds took place at the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) on Wednesday. The event attracted participation from nearly 400 traders and brokers, marking a pivotal moment for the local diamond industry.

Encouraging Transition to Modern Infrastructure

The primary objective of the meeting was to encourage members of the LB trading community to gradually transition their business operations to the Surat Diamond Bourse. Currently, most LB diamond traders operate from Surat's traditional trading hubs, such as Mahidharpura and the Mini Bazaar markets. Organizers emphasized the need to move towards a more organized and efficient trading environment.

During the session, participants received detailed briefings on the SDB's operational ecosystem. This included comprehensive information on the availability of offices and cabins, seamless connectivity, advanced security features, and the overall benefits of operating within a dedicated diamond trading complex. The discussions highlighted how relocating to the bourse could streamline business activities and provide better access to a larger network of manufacturers, traders, and brokers all functioning under one roof.

Key Statements and Commitments

Suresh Shah, a prominent diamond trader, shared his perspective on the transition. "Considering the future growth prospects, it is time we move to modern infrastructure from the unorganized market setups. The furniture work in my office is in its final stage, and I plan to shift in May," he stated, reflecting a growing sentiment among traders.

Following the meeting, the top eight LB traders assured that they would begin operations at the SDB by May. Additionally, around 70 other traders and brokers are expected to commence trading from the bourse in the near term. This indicates a growing momentum within the LB segment towards relocation, signaling a positive shift in the industry's dynamics.

Current Status and Government Support

Currently, nearly 200 offices and cabins at the Surat Diamond Bourse are occupied. Lalji Patel, vice-chairman of SDB, provided further insights into the broader context. "One segment of white diamond traders has already started operating from the SDB, and now LB traders have also expressed interest. Representatives from deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi's office were present at the meeting and assured traders that any issues faced during the transition would be addressed," he explained.

This assurance from government representatives underscores the collaborative effort to facilitate a smooth transition for traders. The meeting not only showcased the world-class infrastructure available at the bourse but also reinforced the advantages of conducting trade from a centralized facility, promising enhanced efficiency and growth opportunities for the diamond trading community in Surat.
