Kerala's Technopark Expands by Over 2.1 Million Square Feet, Targets 40 Million by 2035

According to official data presented in the state assembly, Technopark, Kerala's premier IT hub located in Thiruvananthapuram, has added a substantial 21,12,473 square feet of built-up space since the 2021-22 period. This expansion continues a gradual growth trajectory, with ambitious targets set for the year 2035.

Steady Growth Trajectory Over the Years

The data, presented by the chief minister who also oversees the IT department, reveals that Technopark's development has been incremental rather than abrupt. The total IT built-up area increased from 60 lakh square feet at the start of 2011-12 to 85.10 lakh square feet by the end of 2015-16. This was followed by a further rise to 106.07 lakh square feet by the close of 2020-21. The recent addition of over 21 lakh square feet suggests a continuation of this consistent trend, maintaining a pace aligned with earlier years.

Future Projections and Employment Potential

Officials project that upon completion of all phases, from Phase I to Phase IV, Technopark could eventually reach around 40 million square feet by 2035. These projections also estimate the potential for up to four lakh direct employment opportunities. However, these figures remain contingent on several factors, including phased execution, investment flows, and occupancy demand over the next decade.

Comparative Analysis with Other IT Parks in Kerala

While Technopark remains the primary focus, parallel developments are being pursued in other IT parks across the state. At Infopark in Kochi, total IT space has seen only a marginal increase in recent years, from 92 lakh square feet in 2020-21 to 92.62 lakh square feet in 2024-25. Plans are under consideration to add an additional 15 lakh square feet within the next year.

Similarly, at Cyberpark in Kozhikode, expansion remains at a relatively early stage. The park currently has around 3 lakh square feet of built-up space. A second IT building, with a proposed area of four lakh square feet, is being processed under NABARD's NIDA scheme.

The comparative data across these IT parks indicates that while all three hubs have recorded increases in built-up space over time, Technopark continues to account for a significant share of the state's IT infrastructure expansion.
