TN Chamber of Commerce Advocates for Industrial Transformation in Southern Tamil Nadu

In a significant move aimed at boosting regional economic growth, the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TNCCI) presented a detailed memorandum to Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, during his visit to Madurai on Sunday. The submission outlines a comprehensive strategy to transform Madurai and the broader southern region of Tamil Nadu into a diversified and robust industrial hub.

Leveraging Healthcare and Infrastructure for Economic Growth

N Jegatheesan, President of the TNCCI, emphasized the untapped potential of Madurai and its surrounding areas. He highlighted the critical role of the upcoming AIIMS Madurai project, urging the government to leverage this development to build a world-class healthcare and medical research ecosystem. This initiative is seen as a cornerstone for attracting related industries and fostering innovation in the medical sector.

Jegatheesan called for the prioritization of key infrastructure projects, including the Madurai-Tuticorin and Chennai-Kanyakumari industrial corridors. Additionally, he stressed the necessity of establishing a multimodal logistics park to provide essential support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which are vital to the local economy.

Major Investments and Job Creation Projects

The memorandum brought attention to the proposed PM MITRA park in Virudhunagar, spanning 1,052 acres. This park is projected to attract investments worth Rs 10,000 crore and generate approximately three lakh jobs, marking a significant boost to employment and industrial activity in the region.

Further proposals included:

  • Development of a mega food park in rural areas to enhance agricultural processing and value addition.
  • Modernization of tourism centers to capitalize on the region's cultural and historical assets.
  • Exploitation of solar energy potential to promote green industrial development and sustainability.

Requests for Policy Support and Facilitation

To ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives, the TNCCI has requested a special package specifically tailored for southern Tamil Nadu. This package aims to address regional disparities and accelerate development. The chamber also advocated for:

  1. Streamlined single-window clearances for projects to reduce bureaucratic delays.
  2. Enhanced export facilitation measures to boost international trade from the region.

These measures are designed to create a more conducive business environment, attracting both domestic and foreign investments. The TNCCI's efforts underscore a collective vision to position southern Tamil Nadu as a key player in India's industrial landscape, driving economic diversification and sustainable growth.
