Indore: Prices of several vegetables have increased across Indore, led by a sharp surge in tomatoes, as local supplies have almost dried up and wholesale markets now mostly depend on arrivals from Maharashtra and Kota. Tomato prices have more than doubled in a week, while rates of okra, ridge gourd, cluster beans and green chillies have also moved up.
Tomatoes are currently being sold at Rs 800-900 per 25-kg crate in the wholesale market against Rs 300-400 a week ago, with retail prices climbing sharply across the city.
“Local tomato arrivals are over and the market is largely dependent on produce coming from Maharashtra and Kota. Supplies are limited, which has led to a sudden increase in prices,” a vegetable trader Asif Mansori at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market said.
Other vegetables have also become costlier. Okra prices have increased to Rs 25-30 per kg from Rs 20 a week ago, while ridge gourd is selling at Rs 25-30 per kg compared to Rs 15-20 earlier. Cluster beans (gawar phali) have risen to Rs 30-35 per kg from Rs 15-20.
Green chillies have climbed to Rs 25-35 per kg from around Rs 20 a week ago. Coriander leaves are retailing at Rs 10-20 per bunch, while brinjal prices have remained relatively stable at Rs 10-12 per kg. Traders attributed the spike to the near absence of local produce and weather-related disruptions in supply. Traders said arrivals from local growing belts are negligible and markets are largely dependent on produce coming from Maharashtra. Lower arrivals and weather-related disruptions have pushed up wholesale rates.
“The increase in prices has started affecting monthly household budgets. Tomatoes are an essential ingredient and families have little option but to cut down consumption or spend more,” said Neha Sharma, a resident of Vijay Nagar.
