Trichy Faces LPG Crisis: Rocket & Induction Stoves See Unprecedented Demand
Trichy LPG Shortage Spurs Rocket & Induction Stove Rush

Trichy Residents Turn to Alternative Cooking Solutions Amid Severe LPG Shortage

In the city of Trichy, a significant shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has triggered a dramatic shift in cooking habits, with consumers increasingly adopting alternative methods such as rocket stoves and induction stoves. Household cylinders are also facing heavy demand and limited availability, exacerbating the crisis for both families and businesses.

Unprecedented Surge in Induction Stove Sales

Electrical appliance shops across Trichy are reporting an extraordinary spike in demand for induction stoves, as shoppers flock to stores willing to pay maximum retail prices without waiting for discounts. H Ashok, proprietor of Indar Electricals on Madurai Road, noted that their induction stoves are nearly sold out, with fresh stock eagerly awaited.

"Sales were exceptionally brisk on Tuesday evening and have continued at a strong pace," Ashok explained. "Induction stoves disappear from shelves almost as soon as they arrive. The majority of buyers are seeking reliable alternatives for home cooking due to the LPG scarcity."

Popular models from leading brands are marked as 'currently unavailable' on major e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. Regular online shoppers, who typically wait for discounts, are now rushing to physical outlet stores to secure immediate purchases.

"Online delivery for my preferred model takes five to seven days," said Saraswathi, a homemaker from Anna Nagar. "I prefer buying from a shop immediately to avoid further delays."

Rocket Stoves Gain Popularity Among Businesses

Beyond households, restaurants, small eateries, and roadside cart shops that rely on commercial LPG cylinders are exploring practical alternatives, particularly wooden burners like rocket stoves. Manufacturers are capitalizing on this trend by promoting their products on social media platforms.

A Mohamed Hanifa, of A R Rahman Stove Manufacturer in Ariyamangalam, highlighted the overwhelming response: "We have been receiving nonstop inquiries from across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala over the past few days following our promotional efforts."

The firm produces more than 35 commercial models and 14 domestic ones, some equipped with blowers driven by DC electrical motors. "In just three days, we sold over 100 rocket stoves, priced between Rs7,000 and Rs50,000," Hanifa added. "This represents a multiple times increase compared to our usual sales volume."

Broader Implications and Market Dynamics

The LPG shortage in Trichy is not only affecting daily cooking routines but also reshaping local market dynamics. The sudden demand for alternative cooking solutions has led to:

  • Increased foot traffic in electrical appliance stores.
  • Rapid depletion of induction stove inventories.
  • A shift in consumer behavior, with less emphasis on discounts and more on immediate availability.
  • Growing interest in rocket stoves, especially among commercial entities seeking cost-effective and accessible options.

This situation underscores the broader challenges in energy supply and distribution, prompting residents and businesses to adapt quickly. As the crisis persists, the reliance on alternatives like induction and rocket stoves may continue to rise, potentially influencing long-term cooking habits in the region.
