Tripura's KVK Launches Farmer Field School to Promote Chemical-Free Farming
In a significant move to enhance agricultural sustainability, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Tripura's Sepahijala district has inaugurated a Farmer Field School (FFS) at Chesrimai village in Charilam Block. This initiative aims to equip 100 local farmers with advanced technical skills for chemical-free food production, addressing growing environmental and health concerns.
Hands-On Training for Eco-Friendly Practices
According to Utpal Dey, a plant protection expert at KVK, the FFS provides hands-on training focused on pest ecology, crop-pest relationships, and environmentally sustainable pest management techniques. The program fosters a participatory and experiential learning environment, enabling farmers to directly engage with modern agricultural methods.
Dey highlighted that traditional farming often relies excessively on synthetic pesticides, leading to:
- Degradation of soil and water quality
- Chronic health risks for humans and livestock
- Pest resistance and resurgence of secondary pests
- Decline in beneficial organisms
Collaboration with National Research Institute
The FFS was launched in collaboration with the ICAR-National Research Institute for Integrated Pest Management in New Delhi. This partnership underscores the importance of adopting integrated pest management (IPM) technologies, particularly in the northeastern region of India, where agricultural sustainability is crucial.
Dey emphasized that the excessive use of chemical pesticides has triggered multiple issues, including contamination of natural resources and reduced farm productivity. The FFS serves as a key capacity-building effort to encourage responsible pesticide use and promote economically viable agricultural production.
Objectives and Impact
The primary goals of the Farmer Field School include:
- Boosting farmers' technical skills in sustainable practices
- Promoting integrated pest management to reduce chemical dependency
- Ensuring long-term agricultural viability and environmental health
- Addressing concerns over soil and water contamination
This initiative marks a proactive step toward transforming local farming practices, aligning with broader efforts to enhance food security and ecological balance in Tripura.
