Ujjain's Vikram Vyapar Mela Concludes with Record-Breaking Vehicle Sales and Revenue

The Ujjain Vikram Vyapar Mela concluded on a high note this Sunday, marking a historic achievement for the Madhya Pradesh government. According to official reports from the Ujjain Regional Transport Office (RTO), the fair recorded the sale of over 41,000 vehicles, generating an impressive Rs 225 crore in revenue. This remarkable success was largely driven by a lucrative 50% lifetime rebate on road tax, which attracted a massive influx of buyers, particularly from neighbouring districts like Indore.

Exponential Growth and Financial Impact

Since its inception in 2024 as a key component of the Vikramotsav cultural festival, the Vikram Vyapar Mela has experienced exponential growth. This year's performance has eclipsed all previous records, with buyers flocking to the fair to capitalise on substantial savings on high-end automobiles. Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Santosh Malviya confirmed that the registration surge continued until late Sunday night, highlighting the event's overwhelming popularity.

While the government accrued Rs 225 crore in revenue, an equivalent amount was passed directly to consumers as tax discounts, underscoring the fair's dual benefit of boosting state coffers while providing financial relief to buyers. For luxury car enthusiasts, the 50% tax rebate translated into savings of several lakh rupees on various brands, with sources indicating that a car costing Rs 2.5 crore was also sold at the fair.

Buyer Demographics and Status Symbol Appeal

A significant 80% of buyers at the fair hailed from nearby areas, with Indore being a major contributor. Beyond the financial incentives, there is a growing public perception associated with the 'MP-13' registration tag. As Ujjain is the home turf of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, many high-end buyers view the Ujjain registration as a status symbol, adding a cultural and social dimension to the commercial event.

Under Madhya Pradesh's dealer-point registration norms, customers can finalise their purchase in Ujjain to avail of the tax relief, while dealers registered with the Ujjain RTO deliver the vehicles to buyers' home cities. This streamlined process has facilitated the sale of over one lakh vehicles since 2024, collectively pouring Rs 500 crore into the state's coffers.

Regional Impact and Government Goals

While Ujjain celebrates this retail boom, the Indore RTO has reportedly felt the financial brunt of the shift, as thousands of potential buyers migrated to the fair. For the Madhya Pradesh government, the Vikram Vyapar Mela has successfully achieved its goal of boosting trade and celebrating the state's cultural heritage through a modern commercial lens, reinforcing its role as a key economic and cultural event.

Breakdown of Vehicle Sales at the Fair

  • Two-Wheelers: 6,958 units sold
  • Four-Wheelers (Cars/SUVs): 32,548 units sold
