Women-Led Dairy Cooperatives in Uttar Pradesh Achieve Remarkable Economic Milestone
In a significant development for rural empowerment and economic growth, Milk Producer Companies (MPCLs) across Uttar Pradesh, predominantly led by and involving lakhs of women from over 6,000 villages, are now collecting an impressive 10 lakh litres of milk each day. This massive operation is generating a substantial business of approximately Rs 5,000 crore annually, showcasing the transformative power of community-driven initiatives.
Empowering Women Through the Entire Value Chain
These women are not merely participants; they are actively engaged in the complete value chain of the dairy industry. Their involvement spans from the initial procurement of milk to advanced processing and strategic marketing. This holistic approach ensures that they reap the full benefits of their labor and expertise.
A government spokesperson emphasized the multifaceted impact of this model, stating, "The model is not only providing women employment, it is also establishing them as entrepreneurs and reducing migration from villages while accelerating economic activities at the local level." This statement underscores how the initiative goes beyond mere job creation to foster sustainable development and self-reliance.
Widespread Reach Across Uttar Pradesh's Regions
The success of these MPCLs is evident in their extensive geographical coverage, which spans multiple districts and regions of the state:
- Bundelkhand Region: Balini MPCL operates in Banda, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, and Mahoba districts, bringing economic opportunities to a historically underserved area.
- Purvanchal Region: Kashi MPCL is active in Ballia, Chandauli, Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Sonbhadra, and Varanasi, while Samarthya MPCL serves Pratapgarh, Rae Bareli, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Fatehpur, Amethi, and Kanpur Nagar.
- Gorakhpur Division: Shri Baba Gorakhnath Kripa MPCL works in Deoria, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, and Maharajganj districts, supporting local communities.
- Terai Region: Srijan MPCL assists women in Bareilly, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Sitapur, and Rampur, enhancing livelihoods in this fertile belt.
Strategic Support and Future Prospects
These MPCLs are connected through the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission, which provides crucial support in terms of organization, training, and market linkages. This backing has been instrumental in scaling their operations and ensuring their sustainability.
The daily collection of 10 lakh litres of milk not only highlights the operational efficiency of these cooperatives but also points to a robust supply chain that can meet growing demands. With a business turnover of around Rs 5,000 crore, these women-led enterprises are making a substantial contribution to the state's economy while setting a powerful example for rural development nationwide.
As these MPCLs continue to expand, they are expected to further reduce rural-to-urban migration by creating viable economic opportunities at the grassroots level. This model of women-led entrepreneurship in the dairy sector is poised to inspire similar initiatives across other states, promoting inclusive growth and empowerment.
