Vadodara Ends Dual Gas: PNG Users Lose LPG Cylinders

Vadodara Implements Ban on Dual Gas Connections

In a significant move to streamline gas usage, the practice of consumers maintaining both piped natural gas (PNG) and LPG cylinder connections is set to end in Vadodara. Following directives from the Union government and local district administration, Vadodara Gas Ltd (VGL) has shared its PNG consumer data with oil marketing companies (OMCs), initiating a crackdown on dual connections.

Government Directives and Administrative Action

The Union government issued clear instructions last week, stating that individuals with PNG connections cannot obtain or retain LPG connections. In response, the Vadodara district administration held a meeting where VGL was instructed to provide its consumer details to OMCs. A VGL official confirmed that the data has been handed over, and OMCs are now actively identifying customers who hold both types of connections.

Vadodara district collector Anil Dhameliya emphasized that if a person with a PNG connection attempts to book an LPG cylinder, the booking will be denied, and the existing LPG connection will be cancelled. This measure aims to prevent misuse and ensure efficient resource allocation.

Identification and Verification Process

OMCs have identified approximately 69,000 LPG consumers who have not taken cylinders for an extended period. Physical verification will be conducted to determine whether these individuals also have PNG connections. If such cases are confirmed, their LPG connections will be terminated. Dhameliya noted that panic booking of cylinders has decreased significantly since the announcement, indicating a positive response to the new policy.

Monitoring and Stock Availability

Gas agencies in areas with a strong VGL network have been instructed to monitor the possibility of consumers keeping both LPG and PNG connections. Officials assured that adequate LPG stocks are available to meet demand. Currently, OMCs hold about 19,000 cylinders against a daily demand of around 14,000, ensuring no shortage issues arise during the transition.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to optimize gas distribution and reduce redundancy in household energy supplies. By eliminating dual connections, authorities aim to promote sustainable usage and prevent potential safety hazards associated with multiple gas sources.
