Vedanta Plant Blast Death Toll Climbs to 20 in Chhattisgarh; Authorities Launch 30-Day Probe

Raipur: The devastating boiler explosion at the Vedanta Ltd thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh's Sakti district has now claimed 20 lives, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. In response to the catastrophic industrial accident, a time-bound magisterial investigation has been initiated to uncover the precise cause of the blast and establish clear accountability for the tragedy.

Casualties and Medical Response

A total of 36 workers were directly affected by the powerful explosion. While 16 individuals are currently undergoing medical treatment for their injuries, five critically injured workers have been transferred to advanced healthcare facilities in Raipur for specialized care. The remaining injured are receiving treatment at various hospitals across Raigarh district.

The victims represent a diverse geographical background, with workers hailing from Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. This tragic incident has impacted families across multiple states, highlighting the widespread human cost of industrial accidents.

Comprehensive Investigation Launched

The Dabhra sub-divisional magistrate has been tasked with conducting a thorough probe into the explosion and has been directed to submit a comprehensive report within 30 days. This inquiry will examine eight critical aspects of the incident, including:

  • The precise sequence of events leading to the explosion
  • Potential technical failures or human errors
  • Maintenance protocols and practices for the machinery
  • Adherence to established safety procedures
  • Regular inspection practices and compliance
  • Identification of responsible parties
  • Recommendations for preventive measures

This investigation follows an earlier order from the government directing the Bilaspur divisional commissioner to probe the accident, indicating multiple layers of scrutiny are now focused on determining what went wrong.

Shift from Rescue to Accountability

With rescue operations now concluded, attention has turned squarely toward accountability. Investigators are particularly focused on whether lapses in maintenance procedures or safety compliance contributed to the catastrophic blast that occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Singhitarai village plant.

The explosion resulted from a high-pressure steam pipeline connecting the boiler to the turbine bursting unexpectedly, leaving dozens of workers with severe burn injuries. Survivors receiving treatment have provided harrowing accounts of the moment the explosion transformed their workplace into a scene of chaos and devastation.

Survivor Accounts and Family Anguish

Ajit Das Kar, a worker from Bengal who was painting inside boiler-1 when the explosion occurred, described the terrifying experience: "It felt like a missile had hit. There was smoke everywhere." He estimated that 40-50 workers were present in the boiler area at the time of the blast.

For families of the workers, the aftermath involved an agonizing search through hospital corridors in Sakti and Raigarh districts. Relatives moved desperately from one medical facility to another, peering into intensive care units and searching for information that remained elusive for hours after the explosion.

Sunny Kumar Anant from Janjgir-Champa district, whose brother Rameshwar Mahilange (a boiler operator) was among the deceased, recounted the desperate search: "We started searching around 4 pm and didn't stop till 3.30 am. We checked five to six hospitals, even went inside ICUs."

Officials explained that identifying the deceased proved particularly challenging due to the severity of burns sustained by most victims. The official list of fatalities was released nearly 22 hours after the blast—by which time hope had turned to grief for many families.

Compensation and Support Measures

Following late-night discussions with company representatives, compensation packages have been finalized for the victims and their families. Vedanta has announced Rs 35 lakh as compensation along with employment support for families of each deceased worker. Injured workers will receive Rs 15 lakh each along with counseling support.
