Vijayawada Hotel Industry Sees Revival After Government Increases LPG Supply
The Union government's crucial decision to boost commercial LPG supply by 50% has ignited a wave of optimism among struggling hotel owners in Vijayawada. This intervention arrives after a severe cooking gas shortage forced hundreds of eateries to shut down, creating a significant crisis for the local hospitality sector.
Widespread Closures and Economic Impact
According to the Vijayawada Hotel Owners Association, the gas shortage led to the closure of over 200 hotels for nearly ten days. This widespread shutdown directly impacted approximately 2,500 families whose livelihoods depend entirely on the hospitality industry. The scarcity and soaring prices of fuel created an unsustainable operating environment for many establishments.
"We tried to manage with wood stoves, but it wasn't practical. Finally, the hotel had to close. I have not earned anything for days," said Sajja Ramesh, a hotel worker, highlighting the desperate situation faced by daily wage earners during the crisis.
Desperate Measures and Worker Struggles
As the LPG shortage intensified, several small hotel operators attempted to continue operations using traditional firewood methods. However, rising costs and practical difficulties quickly made this alternative unviable. Workers like Kancherla Suresh expressed their growing concerns about family support during the shutdown period.
"Our income stopped suddenly. We are struggling to support our families. We are hoping hotels reopen soon so we can get back to work," Suresh explained, reflecting the anxiety felt throughout the workforce.
Government Intervention Brings Relief
The Centre's announcement to increase commercial LPG supply by 50% has provided hoteliers with the confidence needed to restart operations, though many are proceeding with caution. Numerous hotels are now preparing to reopen, but most plan to operate with limited menus initially to manage costs and navigate the still-uncertain supply situation.
RV Swamy, president of the AP Star Hotels Association, acknowledged the positive development while calling for additional support. "The 50% increase in LPG supply is a big relief. Most hotels will be able to reopen, though initially with restricted menus. We hope the government will extend more support to stabilise the sector," he stated.
Cautious Optimism for Recovery
While the revival process has begun, hotel workers and small business owners across Vijayawada remain cautiously optimistic as they await a return to normal operations. The steady reopening of kitchens throughout the city represents not just business recovery but the restoration of livelihoods for thousands of families.
The situation highlights how essential energy supply stability is for small and medium enterprises in the hospitality sector. As hotels gradually resume operations, industry representatives continue to monitor supply chains closely while hoping for sustained government support to prevent future disruptions.
