MSRDC Installs Wind Barriers on Mumbai-Pune Expressway Bridge to Ensure Motorist Safety
Wind Barriers Installed on Mumbai-Pune Expressway Bridge

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has commenced the installation of specialized wind barriers on the cable-stayed bridge of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway's Missing Link, now referred to as the new link. This initiative aims to safeguard motorists from strong crosswinds, particularly during the monsoon season and other extreme weather conditions.

Barrier Installation Details

Officials have confirmed that the barriers are being installed on the 650-meter-long cable-stayed bridge that spans Tiger Valley. This bridge is a critical component of the 13.3-kilometer corridor, which was opened to traffic on May 1. The installation process is expected to be completed by next week.

Rajesh Patil, joint managing director of MSRDC, stated, "The bridge's height and location make it particularly susceptible to high-speed winds, necessitating additional safety measures. Wind barriers are being installed near the four pylons, with screen heights ranging from 2.7 meters to 0.6 meters. Each barrier extends 30 meters on either side of the pylons."

Engineering and Safety Considerations

The bridge, supported by 182-meter-high pylons, is highly exposed due to its position above a deep valley. Wind speeds can increase sharply during adverse weather, leading to lateral movement of vehicles, especially smaller ones. Patil explained, "During periods of strong winds, particularly before and during the monsoon, vehicles may experience sideways displacement. These barriers are designed to reduce wind impact and enhance vehicle stability."

Patil clarified that the wind barriers were part of the original design and were not added after the corridor opened. "The bridge has been engineered for a 100-year service life, with all necessary safety measures incorporated to account for future weather conditions," he added.

Additional Infrastructure Updates

MSRDC has also floated tenders to improve telecom connectivity within the Missing Link tunnels. Patil noted, "We are in discussions with service providers to ensure better network connectivity within the tunnels."
