LPG Price Surge Forces Bhopal Kitty Parties to Cut Costs, Get Creative
The ripple effects of escalating LPG prices, fueled by geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, are now simmering far beyond kitchen stoves. In Bhopal, these economic pressures have quietly infiltrated one of the city's most vibrant social circuits: the kitty party scene.
Scaling Back Restaurant Extravagance
For food-loving kitty groups renowned for elaborate spreads and restaurant-hopping rituals, the price spike has necessitated a dialing down of extravagance—sometimes reluctantly, at times with creative flair. Harpreet Saluja of the 'Just Enjoy' kitty group highlights that the change became impossible to ignore this month.
"Every month we head to a classy restaurant and indulge in everything—mocktails, starters, main course, and desserts. It's a full-on feast," she laughs. "But during a recent visit to a star hotel, menu prices had climbed so significantly that we skipped the fluff and went straight to the main course. It felt strange, but when each of us participates in three or four kitty groups monthly, the wallet starts protesting loudly."
Adapting Routines to Economic Realities
Members of the 'Sparkle' group faced a similar moment of truth as they commenced a new kitty round this month. Kalpana Dewan, a prominent member, notes that their years-old routine required a swift makeover.
"We've always maintained a proper lunch kitty at the same restaurant. However, this time the buffet was nearly 30% more expensive. Consequently, we switched to a high-tea format at a different venue. It's lighter on the pocket—though our foodie hearts still yearn for the lavish lunches we once enjoyed," she explains.
Trimming Menus and Embracing Innovation
It's not just venues that are shrinking; menus are undergoing a diet as well. Mrinalini Verma, a senior member of the 'Divine Divas' kitty, shares their adjustment.
"In our kitty, hosted at an upscale restaurant, we previously offered four sweets and four savories for high tea. Now, we've reduced the spread by almost half. Surprisingly, no one minds. Everyone is acutely aware that prices are soaring across the board," she states.
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
With many members juggling multiple kitties each month, some hosts are turning this financial challenge into an opportunity to experiment. Amrita Goel of the 'Sweet and Sorted' group recently replaced the usual restaurant outing with a themed get-together at home.
"Hosting 15-20 people is undoubtedly more work, but I decided to infuse it with fun," she says. "We created a village-themed setup complete with a scarecrow, a baithak, and even a chulha corner. Everyone adored it—we snapped endless pictures and chatted for hours. In fact, it felt more relaxed and intimate than a formal restaurant lunch."
This shift underscores how global economic factors, such as the LPG price surge linked to Middle East tensions, are prompting local social traditions to evolve. Bhopal's kitty parties are demonstrating resilience by adopting cost-effective measures while preserving their core social essence, blending necessity with innovation in these inflationary times.
