EPFO Ends Aadhaar-UAN Seeding Extension: Final Deadline Was Oct 31, 2025
EPFO Ends Aadhaar-UAN Seeding Extension, Final Deadline Passed

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has officially closed the door on any further extensions for linking Aadhaar with the Universal Account Number (UAN). In a decisive move, the retirement fund body has stated that the timeline for this mandatory seeding, which was last extended until 31 October 2025 for specific regions and industries, will not be prolonged any further.

What is the Aadhaar-UAN Seeding Mandate?

The mandatory requirement for employers to file the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) only for members with a seeded and verified Aadhaar number was first introduced on 1 June 2021. The UAN is a 12-digit unique ID for salaried employees that simplifies the management and transfer of their Provident Fund (PF) accounts when switching jobs.

According to a circular dated 1 December 2025, the EPFO has discontinued the practice of granting extensions. The organisation noted that over the past four years, ample opportunities have been provided to complete the process. With current pending cases being marginal and declining steadily, the EPFO aims to prevent further dependency on recurring extensions.

Who Got the Last Extension and What Now?

The final extension, granted via a Ministry of Labour & Employment (MoL&E) communication on 28 October, provided extra time until the end of October 2025 for two key categories:

  • North East Region (NER): Covering the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.
  • Specific Industries: Including Beedi-making, building and construction, and plantation industries (like Tea, Coffee, Cardamom, Pepper, Jute, Rubber, Cinchona, and Cashewnuts).

However, that grace period has now conclusively ended. The EPFO has instructed all its zonal and regional offices to immediately launch intensive awareness campaigns targeting the concerned employers in these sectors and regions.

Strict Compliance for Future ECR Filings

The circular leaves no room for ambiguity regarding future compliance. It clearly states that ECR filing for the month of November 2025 onwards will be permitted only for those PF members whose Aadhaar is duly seeded and verified with their UAN. This rule will be enforced without any exceptions.

This firm stance underscores the EPFO's push towards complete digital integration and verification of its massive member database. Employers must now ensure that all their employees' PF accounts are fully compliant with the Aadhaar seeding requirement to continue filing monthly contributions seamlessly. Failure to do so could disrupt the PF contribution process for non-compliant members.
