Prayagraj Grapples with LPG Cylinder Crisis as Panic Buying Creates Massive Backlog
The city of Prayagraj is currently experiencing significant disruptions in its domestic LPG cylinder supply chain, with panic buying among residents leading to backlogs of 800 to 1,000 pending orders at individual gas agencies. Despite repeated assurances from district authorities about adequate stock availability, consumers are facing delivery delays extending from the usual 24 hours to 72 or even 96 hours.
Surge in Bookings Overwhelms Distribution Systems
According to multiple distributors operating in the Sangam City area, booking volumes suddenly surged to between two and five times their normal levels following the Holi festival period. This unprecedented demand has overwhelmed existing booking systems and stretched delivery timelines considerably, even as distributors have increased their delivery capacity by approximately 20 to 30 percent.
"If oil agencies manage to maintain the supply chain of domestic LPG cylinder consignments, the backlog will be cleared easily," explained one distributor who requested anonymity. "Bookings with distributors suddenly surged to 2 to 5 times the normal volume, creating a backlog despite deliveries being ramped up."
Residents Face Extended Waiting Periods
The practical impact on Prayagraj households has been substantial. Geetanjali, a local housewife, reported still waiting for her refill that was booked on March 11. "I usually get it in a day or two, but this time it's taking forever," she expressed with visible frustration. Similar stories emerged across multiple neighborhoods, with residents spending hours waiting for cylinders that were booked days earlier.
Neerja from Ashok Nagar arrived at her local gas agency at 10 am on Monday only to leave disappointed when the expected consignment failed to materialize. Some consumers found themselves unable to even book refills due to the overwhelming demand.
Supply Chain Challenges Compound the Problem
Distributors identified irregular consignment deliveries from oil companies as a key bottleneck exacerbating the situation. "If we get consignment from the oil company on every second or third day, this creates a big backlog as bookings for cylinders continue every day," noted a distributor operating from Stanley Road. "The supply chain is likely to improve in days to come if we get consignments of cylinders on every second day."
Gas agency owners acknowledged that while the situation has shown slight improvement recently, maintaining consistent supply remains challenging until the distribution pipeline stabilizes completely.
Authorities Monitor Situation Closely
District administration officials have implemented enhanced monitoring measures in response to the developing situation. Government representatives are conducting twice-daily stock checks at gas agencies and storage godowns while actively collecting consumer feedback on the ground.
A senior official clarified the administrative perspective: "There is no shortage of domestic LPG, but bookings shot up manifold after the Holi festival. With the sudden spike stretching delivery timelines, the delivery time increased from 24 hours to at least 72 or 96 hours, despite distributors working extra hours."
Authorities have also intensified efforts to prevent potential black marketing activities, deploying additional personnel to monitor distribution channels and ensure equitable access to available LPG supplies.
The combination of consumer anxiety, supply chain irregularities, and unprecedented demand has created a perfect storm in Prayagraj's domestic fuel sector, with residents hoping for normalization in the coming days as distribution systems adapt to the elevated demand patterns.
