In a significant push for urban development, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) intensified its execution of Town Planning (TP) Schemes throughout 2025. The year-long drive focused on opening new thoroughfares, widening existing roads, and reclaiming vast tracts of land earmarked for public use by conducting large-scale encroachment removals.
Scale of Encroachment Removal for Land Reclamation
Official data reveals the sheer magnitude of the operation. Between January 1 and December 29, 2025, the estate and town development officer departments across all seven civic zones worked to reclaim reserved plots. The AMC successfully took possession of nearly 17.08 lakh square metres of land by clearing encroachments from 290 plots specifically reserved for public purposes under various TP Schemes.
The action against unauthorized structures was comprehensive. In total, 3,831 residential and non-residential units were removed specifically for TP Scheme implementation. Breaking this down, the residential sector saw the removal of 3,263 units, comprising 1,050 temporary (kaccha) and 2,213 permanent (pakka) houses. In the non-residential category, 568 structures were cleared, which included 213 temporary and 355 permanent constructions.
Road Expansion and Infrastructure Development
A parallel and crucial facet of the drive involved creating and widening road networks. The AMC undertook action on 402 roads for the construction and widening of TP roads. This effort directly led to the opening of approximately 111.267 kilometres of roads across different city neighbourhoods, aiming to decongest and improve connectivity.
To facilitate this road expansion, a separate set of demolitions was necessary. Overall, 4,216 encroachments obstructing road widening and TP road alignments were demolished. This included 2,386 residential structures (664 temporary and 1,722 permanent) and 1,830 non-residential units (386 temporary and 1,444 permanent) located within the road project areas.
Impact and Forward Path for Ahmedabad
The coordinated 2025 initiative marks one of the most assertive years for the AMC in implementing long-pending town planning schemes. By reclaiming land and removing physical bottlenecks, the corporation has cleared the ground for future public infrastructure projects. The freed-up land, now under AMC's possession, is expected to be utilized for amenities like gardens, schools, hospitals, and other civic utilities as originally planned.
The large-scale removal of encroachments and the addition of over 111 km of road length are poised to have a lasting impact on Ahmedabad's urban landscape. This drive underscores the civic body's focus on enforcing development plans and improving the city's infrastructure backbone for its growing population.
