The engineering department of the Chandigarh municipal corporation on Wednesday selected an agency to construct two new drainage lines along the perimeter of the Dadumajra dumping site. Out of two bids received for the estimated ₹3 crore project, the civic body accepted the lowest bid of ₹2.52 crore.
Project Details and Timeline
Sources in the civic body confirmed to TOI that the allotment process has commenced. After completing the necessary paperwork and documentation, the work will be formally assigned to the selected agency. The 1.32-kilometer drainage project is specifically designed to trap toxic wastewater seepage leaking from the garbage mound.
Key Routes Covered
The drainage system covers two heavily trafficked routes flanking the dumping ground: the national highway leading towards Dhanas marble market and New Chandigarh, and the road leading to Maloya along the Patiala Ki Rao rivulet. These roads endure heavy daily wear from thousands of regular commuters and commercial trucks.
Previous Phase and Future Plans
This phase follows a preliminary ground survey conducted by the engineering department. The Dadumajra landfill is bounded by three sides, and the corporation has already completed the construction of the first drainage line running along the residential sector. With all three boundary drains eventually in place, the municipal authority aims to collect all toxic leachate and divert it to the leachate treatment plant (LTP). Containing the foul runoff is considered critical by officials to protect the structural integrity of both roads.
