Chennai Metro Phase-2: Koyambedu–Butt Road Line to Open by June, Easing Traffic Woes
Chennai Metro Phase-2 Koyambedu–Butt Road Line June Launch

Chennai Metro Phase-2 Koyambedu–Butt Road Line Set for Early June Launch

In a significant boost to Chennai's public transport infrastructure, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced that the Koyambedu–Butt Road stretch of Phase-2 will open by June 2026. This development comes as a welcome relief for commuters grappling with the city's notorious traffic congestion, as the line is launching approximately six months ahead of its original schedule.

Enhanced Connectivity for Western and Southern Chennai

The 12-kilometer elevated line forms a crucial part of Corridor-5, which is the extensive 44.6-kilometer Madhavaram–Sholinganallur route under Phase-2. It features 13 strategically placed elevated stations designed to serve key residential and commercial hubs. Residents of areas such as Virugambakkam, Manapakkam, and Ramapuram will benefit from quicker and more efficient access to central Chennai, significantly cutting down on daily commute times.

Seamless Integration with Existing Metro Network

A key highlight of this new stretch is its integration with the existing Phase-1 metro network. At Koyambedu, a dedicated skywalk will connect the Phase-2 line with Phase-1, ensuring seamless transfers for passengers. This integration is expected to enhance the overall metro experience, making it more convenient for users to navigate across different parts of the city without hassle.

Substantial Passenger Benefits and Travel Time Reduction

The opening of the Koyambedu–Butt Road line is poised to deliver multiple advantages to daily commuters:

  • Office-goers will find it easier to reach the bustling Porur IT corridor.
  • Visitors will have improved access to the Chennai Trade Centre for events and exhibitions.
  • Traders and shoppers can commute more efficiently to the Koyambedu wholesale market, a major commercial hub.

Commuters like N Santosh from Ramapuram have expressed optimism, anticipating a significant reduction in travel time on congested roads such as Mount–Poonamallee Road. However, they emphasize the need for robust last-mile connectivity solutions to maximize the metro's effectiveness.

Phase-2 Operational Milestones and Double-Decker Stations

This line is part of a broader Phase-2 rollout. The first operational corridor of Phase-2, the 14.5-kilometer Poonamallee bypass–Vadapalani line, is expected to commence operations in February 2026. It will connect with the Koyambedu–Butt Road stretch at four innovative double-decker stations:

  1. Alwarthirunagar
  2. Valasaravakkam
  3. Karambakkam
  4. Alapakkam

These stations are designed to enhance accessibility and commuter convenience by facilitating smooth transfers between the two lines.

Overcoming Construction Challenges and Revised Plans

The construction of this metro stretch has not been without its hurdles. Civil work along Butt Road has faced delays due to narrow roads and dense urban development, making it challenging to proceed without causing major traffic disruptions. To mitigate this, some structures over the Kathipara flyover are being constructed during night hours to avoid daytime traffic congestion. The balanced cantilever work here is anticipated to be completed by April 2026.

Initially, plans focused on opening the Koyambedu–Alandur section first. However, these were revised to prioritize the Koyambedu–Butt Road stretch. This strategic shift aims to advance Phase-2 operations more efficiently while adeptly managing construction constraints and minimizing traffic concerns in the area.

The early launch of the Koyambedu–Butt Road metro line represents a proactive step by CMRL to address Chennai's growing traffic challenges. By improving connectivity and reducing travel times, it is set to transform the daily commute for thousands of residents, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient urban transport system in the city.
