Chennai Metro's Major Southern Corridor Project Stalled at Central Government Level
A crucial metro rail extension project in Chennai, designed to significantly enhance connectivity to the city's southern suburbs, has been languishing with the central government for nearly a full year. The proposed 15.46-kilometer Airport–Kilambakkam metro extension, valued at a substantial Rs 9,335 crore, remains stuck in preliminary examination stages despite the Detailed Project Report being submitted back in April 2025.

The ambitious corridor will feature 13 elevated stations along its route, connecting key residential and transit hubs including Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur, and Vandalur. According to information obtained through an RTI reply from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the project has not yet progressed to the Public Investment Board or Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for formal approval.
Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited have confirmed that the central government has not sought any additional clarifications since April 12, 2025, despite multiple revisions to the proposal and Tamil Nadu's state-level approval granted in April 2025. The state government had even allocated Rs 1,964 crore for preparatory work in September 2025, demonstrating its commitment to advancing the project.
