The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) has given the green light for a crucial modernization project for Gurgaon's Rapid Metro. The corporation will spend Rs 11.7 crore to upgrade the ageing Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) and Passenger Announcement and Information Systems (PAIS) installed in its trains.
Why the Upgrade Was Urgently Needed
This decision directly impacts five Rapid Metro trains that have been in continuous service since the line's inauguration in November 2013. Over the past decade, the onboard equipment has reached the end of its operational life. Officials confirmed that spare parts are no longer available in the market, making repairs impossible.
Attempts to fix the failing systems through private vendors and even the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) own electronics laboratory proved unsuccessful. Consequently, many trains were running with only partially functional safety and information systems, creating potential gaps in passenger security and real-time communication.
The situation reached a critical point when the original equipment supplier declared it could no longer provide emergency spare parts. This was due to restrictions imposed by the rolling stock manufacturer. A technical assessment ultimately concluded that the systems were now obsolete, leaving a complete replacement as the only practical solution.
Details of the Modernization Plan
The allocated budget of Rs 11.7 crore will be used to install new, upgraded CCTV and PAIS units across the five trains. The primary goal is to restore full functionality and ensure smooth, uninterrupted operations for the thousands who rely on this service daily.
A senior HMRTC official outlined the plan, stating, "HMRTC has decided to replace the existing CCTV and passenger information systems in these five trains with upgraded systems. Usable parts from the old setup will be retained as backup spares for other trains on the network." This approach ensures cost-effectiveness by creating a reserve of components for the broader fleet.
Significance for Gurgaon Commuters
The Rapid Metro is a vital artery for Gurgaon, covering an 11.7-kilometre corridor with 11 stations along Golf Course Road. It connects major commercial and residential hubs including Cyber City, DLF Phases 1 through 3, and sectors 42-43, 53-54, and 55-56. Its integration with the DMRC's Yellow Line at Sikanderpur station makes it a key interchange point for countless daily commuters.
The upgrade of these systems is more than just a technical refresh.
