The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has announced a comprehensive revamp of service roads along three major master roads in the city, targeting improved connectivity and reduced traffic congestion. This significant infrastructure project, estimated at around Rs 20 crore, will cover approximately 7.5 kilometers of service roads, with work expected to commence by March 2024 and complete within six months.
Project Details and Timeline
GMDA officials have already floated a tender for the repair work, aiming to ensure "through-and-through" connectivity. The goal is to allow commuters to travel seamlessly along these parallel roads without encountering broken links or unusable patches. Once the tendering process concludes, execution is slated to begin by March, with the entire project anticipated to wrap up within a six-month timeframe.
Key Stretches and Traffic Impact
Under the plan, service roads along sectors 51-57, 52–57, and 51-52 will be resurfaced. These roads handle a steady flow of vehicles from the Tau Devi Lal Biodiversity Park towards Ambedkar Chowk and the Nirvana Country road, remaining busy throughout the day. The repair work is designed to distribute traffic more effectively, reducing the burden on the main carriageway and enhancing overall flow and safety.
Comprehensive Improvements Beyond Resurfacing
Apart from strengthening and road resurfacing, GMDA will undertake drainage improvements to address recurring waterlogging issues along these stretches. As part of this, green spaces between the main carriageway and the service road will be lowered by cutting down the earthen portion. This measure aims to reduce the risk of water accumulation and ensure smoother rainwater flow during monsoon showers.
Additionally, footpath repair works will be carried out alongside the service roads to improve pedestrian safety. Damaged and uneven footpaths will be fixed to make the corridors safer for residents walking to nearby markets. Fencing will also be installed along the green spaces to prevent encroachment and protect landscaped areas.
Resident Reactions and Future Plans
Residents have welcomed the move, highlighting the increased traffic pressure over the years. Pawan Kumar Yadav, RWA president of Sushant Lok 2 and 3, noted that service roads are crucial for local traffic, especially during school hours when crossing becomes challenging. Proper repairs are expected to ease congestion and enhance safety for pedestrians.
In addition to this project, GMDA is planning to revamp around 10 kilometers of service roads along three other stretches: Ardee City–Sohna Road, the sector dividing road between sectors 49 and 50, and the sector dividing road between sectors 30 and 31. Officials are currently preparing estimates for this project, which will be taken up once the proposal is finalized.
