Gurgaon's Ambedkar Chowk Flyover Project Moves Forward with Bid Invitation Timeline

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to take a significant step in addressing one of the city's major traffic bottlenecks. Officials have confirmed that bids for the construction of a flyover at Ambedkar Chowk will be invited by February 15, marking a crucial advancement for this long-awaited infrastructure project. The design for the flyover has already been finalized, paving the way for the tendering process to commence in the coming days.

Strategic Location and Traffic Challenges

Ambedkar Chowk serves as a critical intersection connecting sectors 45, 46, 51, and 52 in Gurgaon. This junction experiences heavy traffic throughout the day, with peak hours often turning it into a severe bottleneck. GMDA data reveals that approximately 6,100 passenger car units (PCUs) pass through this intersection daily during peak periods, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

The area's importance stems from its role as a vital link for residents of nearby sectors and major residential societies such as Ardee City and Mayfield Garden. Commuters from Malibu Towne and South City-2, as well as those traveling towards Park Hospital, frequently use this stretch. The presence of several schools, hospitals, and commercial establishments further intensifies vehicular movement, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.

Project Specifications and Expected Benefits

According to the finalized plan, the proposed flyover will be a 950-metre-long, four-lane bidirectional structure. This infrastructure is designed to alleviate congestion and streamline traffic flow at the junction. Key expected benefits include:

  • Reduction in delays caused by frequent traffic snarls
  • Improved connectivity towards Sohna Road
  • Minimized stoppages at the junction
  • Ensuring smoother through movement for vehicles

Project Timeline and Cost Considerations

The flyover project carries an estimated cost of around Rs 37 crore. Administrative approval was granted in July 2024, setting the stage for the current phase of development. Once construction begins, the project is anticipated to take approximately two years to complete.

Authorities have emphasized that measures will be implemented to ensure minimal disruption during the construction phase. A comprehensive traffic management plan will be put in place, featuring barricading to regulate movement and reduce inconvenience to daily commuters.

Community Perspectives and Resident Concerns

Residents have long advocated for improvements at Ambedkar Chowk, citing daily congestion and increasing travel times as persistent issues. Chaitali Mandhotra, an RWA member of Ardee City, expressed both hope and concern about the project: "This is one of the busiest stretches leading towards Sohna Road. The road is already narrow, and construction could worsen the situation if not managed properly. Authorities must ensure timely execution and effective traffic management; otherwise, there will be complete mayhem for the commuters."

The GMDA's move to invite bids by mid-February represents a concrete step toward addressing these community concerns while advancing Gurgaon's urban infrastructure development.
