Gurgaon's Rs 24.7 Crore Road Repair Fails, 200m Stretch Causes Daily Chaos
Gurgaon's Rs 24.7 Cr road repair fails, causes traffic chaos

A crucial 200-meter section of a master road in Gurgaon, which underwent a major repair project worth crores just a year ago, has deteriorated badly, becoming a daily nightmare for commuters and residents. The stretch between Krishna Chowk and Rezang La Chowk is now riddled with uneven surfaces and loose material, leading to persistent traffic snarls and safety hazards.

Crore-Rupee Repair Fails Within Months

In a significant infrastructure failure, the repair work on this vital link road has not stood the test of time. In December 2024, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) approved a budget of Rs 24.7 crore for special repairs on the master road connecting Krishna Chowk to Rezang La Chowk. However, residents allege the work was substandard, with the asphalt surface beginning to peel off at multiple spots merely months after the project was completed.

"The road has been deteriorating over the past year. The patch near the ACP office and the area close to the Rezang La roundabout are also in bad shape. The contractor did not carry out the work properly, and the authorities ignored the problem," said Lajpat Gupta, a resident of Palam Vihar.

Daily Hardship and Safety Risks for Commuters

The poor condition of the road is causing significant daily inconvenience. The stretch serves as an important connector for residents of Palam Vihar, Sector 23A, nearby colonies, and shoppers heading to Vyapar Kendra. According to locals, after last year's monsoon, potholes were only temporarily filled with granular material instead of proper blacktopping. This has left the surface bumpy, uneven, and dusty.

The damaged road has effectively reduced its usable width, forcing vehicles to slow down drastically, especially near the turn towards Vyapar Kendra, worsening peak-hour congestion. "The loose material rises whenever vehicles pass, creating dust and increasing the risk of skidding, especially for two-wheelers. This is a master road, but it now resembles a neglected internal lane," said Vikrant Singh, a resident of Sector 23A.

He added, "Those who are at fault should be accountable for causing daily hardship to commuters." Despite numerous complaints from the community, no fresh repair work has been initiated to address the crumbling infrastructure.

GMDA's Response and the Way Forward

Facing public outcry, a senior GMDA official has acknowledged the failure. The authority has decided to take action against the contractor responsible for the shoddy work. The official stated, "We are terminating the non-performing contractor, and a new contractor will be engaged to take up the balance work."

Residents are now demanding immediate and proper re-laying of the entire affected stretch. They are also calling for strict action against the officials and the contractor responsible for the poor-quality work that wasted public funds and continues to disrupt daily life. The situation highlights a recurring issue of inadequate oversight and quality control in Gurgaon's infrastructure projects, leaving citizens to bear the brunt of mismanagement.
