The crucial bus shelter for the Hubballi-Dharwad Bus Rapid Transit System (HDBRTS) located near the Canara Hotel at Hosur Cross in Hubballi is set to be dismantled. This move is a direct consequence of the upcoming construction of a new flyover at Hosur Circle, a project spearheaded by the National Highways Public Works Department (NH PWD).
Flyover Project Drives Infrastructure Change
The primary reason for removing the bus shelter is to expedite the construction of the new flyover. Authorities believe this infrastructure upgrade is essential to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and improve overall transportation efficiency at Hosur Circle, a major junction for daily commuters. The decision was formalized in a recent meeting chaired by local MLA Mahesh Tenginakai and Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu, where NH PWD officials outlined the project's necessities.
Operational and Financial Blow to HDBRTS
The dismantling poses a significant challenge for the HDBRTS network. The Hosur Cross shelter is not just a stop; it's a key revenue-generating node. It serves hundreds of passengers daily, particularly those traveling to Dharwad via Chigari buses. Vivekanand Vishwagnya, an HDBRTS official, highlighted the shelter's importance, stating that operating without it is "very difficult." He warned of severe revenue impact, a situation exacerbated by an existing temporary stoppage on Neeligin Road near KC Circle, which has already led to fewer passengers.
Search for Interim Solutions
In response to the impending removal, HDBRTS officials have initiated talks with the district administration and other stakeholders. The goal is to find a viable alternative to minimize disruption. Following the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu directed officials from NH PWD, Traffic Police, NWKRTC, and HDBRTS to conduct a joint spot inspection. Their mandate is to identify a suitable location for a temporary bus shelter to facilitate the swift removal of the existing structure and ensure service continuity.
The situation underscores the critical need for strategic coordination between different government and transport agencies. Balancing ambitious infrastructure development with the operational needs of existing public transit systems is paramount.
