Indore's Multi-Storey Parking Facility Demolished to Pave Way for Metro Station Development
In a significant development for Indore's urban infrastructure, a multi-storey parking facility located on approximately 4000 square feet of land near Krishnapura Chhatri was completely demolished over the weekend. This demolition was carried out to facilitate the construction of a new Metro station and related administrative offices, marking a crucial step forward for the city's expanding Metro rail network.
Demolition Process and Safety Measures
The demolition operations commenced on Friday night at around 11:30 PM and continued until 3 AM, with the work being executed through a collaborative effort. A private agency contracted by the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) led the demolition, while the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) provided essential on-site support through its dedicated removal team. The operations persisted throughout Saturday and Sunday to ensure the complete clearance of the remaining structure.
To prioritize public safety during the demolition, one lane of the adjacent road was temporarily closed to traffic. This precautionary measure was implemented as a significant portion of the building was brought down, minimizing risks to pedestrians and vehicles in the vicinity.
Financial Compensation and Project Background
IMC additional commissioner Abhay Rajangaonkar confirmed that the MPMRCL compensated the civic body with approximately Rs 1.93 crore for both the structure and the land. This financial settlement facilitated the smooth handover of the site for Metro-related development.
The demolished parking facility, which had become a bottleneck for the Metro project, was originally constructed in 2008 under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). It was developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model and subsequently leased out in 2009. The 15-year lease for operating the parking lot expired about a year ago, enabling the IMC to transfer the vacant site to support the Metro expansion efforts.
Impact on Metro Project Progress
The removal of this multi-level parking lot has effectively cleared the final obstacle that was hindering further construction at the site. The Metro project has been advancing rapidly on the Bhau Shinde Complex land near the MG Road police station. While a portion of the required land had been acquired earlier, this demolition now unlocks the full potential for uninterrupted development, accelerating the timeline for the new Metro station and associated offices.
This strategic move underscores Indore's commitment to enhancing its public transportation infrastructure, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity for residents.
