Indore-Ujjain Metropolitan Region Poised for Major Geographical Expansion
The Indore-Ujjain Metropolitan Region (IUMR) is on the verge of another significant territorial expansion, with authorities actively considering the inclusion of two additional tehsils from Shajapur district. This strategic move would elevate the development project to an impressive 16,000 square kilometers, marking a substantial increase in its operational scope and regional influence.
Fifth Expansion Since Inception
This latest development represents the fifth expansion since the region's establishment, following extensive high-level deliberations among planning authorities. The most notable aspect of this expansion involves the potential integration of the entire Shajapur district into the IUMR framework, fundamentally reshaping the metropolitan landscape of central Madhya Pradesh.
Indore Development Authority (IDA) CEO Parikshit Zade provided crucial insights into the ongoing planning process. "Following comprehensive discussions at the highest levels, we are currently preparing a detailed plan to incorporate Shujalpur and Kalapipal tehsils of Shajapur district into the Indore-Ujjain Metropolitan Region," Zade explained. "These tehsils were previously part of the Bhopal Metropolitan Region. We are now awaiting final approval for this new strategic plan."
Becoming India's Third-Largest Metropolitan Area
If this expansion receives official approval, the IUMR would achieve a remarkable milestone in urban development. The region would become India's third-largest metropolitan area in terms of geographical scale, positioning itself just behind Delhi and Lucknow. This elevated status would significantly enhance the region's national profile and development potential.
Infrastructure and Economic Advantages
The expanded IUMR boasts substantial infrastructure assets that support its growth ambitions:
- One international airport serving the region
- Five major railway junctions facilitating connectivity
- Future proposed airports in Ujjain and Ratlam to enhance regional accessibility
The region strategically leverages its proximity to the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, creating exceptional opportunities to attract large-scale national and international investments. This geographical advantage positions IUMR as a prime destination for industrial and commercial development.
Additional Development Initiatives
Complementing the territorial expansion, the state government has approved an additional Rs 900 crore for critical infrastructure projects. This funding specifically targets taking a key 3.3-kilometer stretch of the Indore Metro underground between Khajrana Square and the railway station. This underground section aims to alleviate traffic congestion in dense urban zones, improving mobility for residents and commuters.
Comprehensive Regional Development Plan
A new regional development plan is expected to be finalized within the next eight months, providing a comprehensive framework for coordinated growth. Officials emphasize that this integrated approach will prevent fragmented planning and ensure that residents in outlying areas—including Dewas, Dhar, and Ratlam—gain access to diverse employment opportunities without needing to migrate to the core city of Indore.
Evolution of the IUMR Plan
The development of the IUMR has followed an evolutionary path:
- The tender to prepare the IUMR plan was initially floated in July 2024
- The region's boundaries have been modified at least four times since then
- Previous expansions incorporated areas from Dhar, Shajapur, and Ratlam districts
- In December 2025, IUMR was established at 14,550 square kilometers following integration of areas from Ratlam and Dhar
- The original plan prepared in early 2025 covered just under 10,000 square kilometers
The fundamental design of the region focuses on creating a coordinated economic hub that synchronizes infrastructure development across central Madhya Pradesh. This strategic vision aims to transform the region into a powerhouse of economic activity while ensuring balanced regional development and improved quality of life for all residents within the expanded metropolitan area.
