The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a significant step to decongest Kanpur's roads by releasing crucial funds for a major infrastructure project. On Friday, the state government disbursed Rs 35.87 crore to the Public Works Department for land acquisition related to the ambitious Anwarganj elevated railway track project.
Project Details and Land Acquisition
District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh confirmed the development, stating that the funds will facilitate the acquisition of approximately 22,306 square metres of land. This financial injection is expected to expedite the final stages of the land acquisition process, paving the way for the commencement of compensation distribution to affected landowners. The entire project carries a hefty estimated price tag of around Rs 1,115 crore.
A Solution to Chronic Traffic Woes
The decision to construct this nearly 17-kilometre-long elevated corridor stems from the persistent and severe traffic congestion on the crucial GT Road, often described as the city's lifeline. The primary objective is to eliminate a total of 18 railway level crossings located between Mandhana and Anwarganj.
Currently, the heavy rail traffic on the Anwarganj–Kasganj route, which includes 55 pairs of passenger trains and about 35 freight trains daily, forces these crossings to shut every 30 minutes. This frequent interruption causes massive traffic snarls and daily inconvenience for thousands of commuters.
Expected Impact and Timeline
The completion of this elevated track is projected to be a game-changer for urban mobility in Kanpur. Authorities estimate that over 50 lakh (5 million) people will benefit from smoother and uninterrupted road traffic flow once the project is operational. The removal of these 18 crossings will provide major relief from the chronic traffic congestion that plagues the city.
The government has set a target to complete the entire construction work by the year 2027. With the land acquisition funds now released, the project is poised to move from the planning and administrative phase into more active implementation, bringing Kanpur closer to a significant upgrade in its transportation infrastructure.
