Kochi's Chilavannoor Bund Road Bridge Project Resumes After Months of Delays

After enduring months of stagnation, legal obstacles, and growing public frustration, the Chilavannoor Bund Road bridge project in Kochi is finally moving forward with renewed vigor. Construction activities have resumed in full swing, marking a significant milestone for this long-delayed infrastructure initiative.

Target Completion Set for May 2026

Authorities have set an ambitious target to complete the bridge construction and open the crucial road connecting the NH bypass with Panampilly Nagar by the end of May 2026. This timeline aims to have the project operational before the onset of the monsoon season, ensuring smoother traffic flow during heavy rains.

Key Challenge: Fabrication of 90-Metre Steel Span

A primary reason for the prolonged construction period was the delay in fabricating a 90-metre central steel span. This structure is set to become the longest road bridge span in Kochi and forms a critical component of the overall bridge design. The contractor initially began steel span works at a fabrication yard in Tiruchirappalli, but progress was hindered by multiple factors.

Unexpected weather events, including heavy rains caused by Cyclone Ditwah, contributed significantly to the delays, according to project sources. However, there is now positive news on this front.

Fabrication Completed, Logistics Underway

"Fabrication works have now been completed and the logistics phase has begun. The first consignment of steel parts arrived at the project site on Sunday," confirmed a senior official from Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). This development signals a major step forward in overcoming previous bottlenecks.

Project History and Local Engagement

The contract for reconstructing the Chilavannoor Bund Road bridge was awarded to the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society in November 2023, with a stipulated completion time of 20 months. However, commencement of work was delayed for several months due to protests from local residents.

With proactive support from elected representatives, KMRL addressed the concerns raised by locals. A public meeting was held on March 1, 2024, which helped facilitate dialogue and understanding. Following this engagement, survey and construction activities finally commenced.

Safety Measures and Traffic Management

Construction activities initially progressed as scheduled, and two-wheeler traffic was permitted through the site. However, after a few minor accidents and in response to requests from local residents, the road passing through the worksite was completely closed. This decision prioritized public safety, demonstrating the project's commitment to minimizing risks during construction.

Strategic Importance and Funding

The project, funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), aims to provide a vital alternative to the heavily congested Sahodaran Ayyappan Road. It will connect the NH Bypass (near Thykoodam) to the city center, potentially bypassing the notorious Vyttila bottleneck and easing traffic congestion in the area.

Broader Vision: Chilavannoor Canal Rejuvenation

The Chilavannoor Canal rejuvenation project—which includes the Bund Road bridge, canal bank beautification, boat terminals, and dredging—represents a transformative step toward sustainable urban development in Kochi. This comprehensive initiative aims to restore ecological balance, improve urban mobility, and create vibrant public spaces for the community.

The resumption of construction brings hope that Kochi will soon benefit from enhanced infrastructure that addresses both transportation needs and environmental sustainability.
