Mira Bhayandar and Dahisar residents are on the cusp of a major urban mobility revolution as the eagerly awaited Metro Line 9 prepares for its inaugural run. The line, which was officially commissioned in October 2024, marks the first-ever metro service for the Mira Bhayandar region, promising to drastically cut commute times and decongest the perpetually busy Western Express Highway.
A Seamless Extension of Line 7
The newly built corridor is not a standalone line but a strategic extension of the existing Metro Line 7. This design offers a significant advantage: trains originating from Mira Bhayandar will travel directly to Andheri East without requiring passengers to change trains at an interchange. This seamless connectivity is expected to be a major draw for daily commuters. Looking ahead, the future extension of Line 7, designated as Line 7A, will provide direct connectivity to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA). As of September 2025, about 62% of the work on this airport link was already complete.
Phased Inauguration and Station Details
The launch of Metro Line 9 will follow a phased approach. The first phase, covering a stretch of 4.5 kilometres, is now slated for inauguration in January 2026. This initial launch was delayed due to the Model Code of Conduct and is expected to occur after January 15. The first four stations to become operational are:
- Dahisar
- Pandhurang Wadi
- Miragaon
- Kashigaon
Following this, the next four stations are projected to open within the subsequent four to six months. These include Sai Baba Nagar, Meditiya Nagar, Shahid Bhagat Singh Garden, and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Bhayandar.
Project Scope and Future Integration
With a total project cost of Rs 6,607 crore, Metro Line 9 spans 13.581 kilometres. The majority of the track (11.386 km) is elevated, running along the Western Express Highway and crossing over the Dahisar check naka, while 2.195 kilometres will be underground. The line is projected to serve a staggering 11.12 lakh daily commuters by 2031.
A key interchange will be at the Dahisar East station, connecting commuters to Metro Line 7 (towards Gundavali) and Metro Line 2A (towards DN Nagar and Andheri West). In the longer term, plans are in place to link Line 9 with the proposed Metro Line 10 to Thane and Metro Line 4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavali-Gaimukh), although work on these connector lines has not yet commenced.
An official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) stated, "Testing by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) is currently ongoing, which typically requires several rounds of checks, feedback, and rectification till safety and smooth operations are ensured. After the first stations are opened, the next goal will be to open the next four stations within the next four months." This meticulous process underscores the commitment to passenger safety before the much-anticipated public launch.
