Mohali's New 8.5-km Airport Link Road to Open This Month, Easing Traffic
Mohali Airport Link Road to open partially this month

In a significant development for daily commuters and air travelers, a major infrastructure project in Mohali is set to offer much-needed respite from chronic traffic snarls. The new 8.5-kilometer alternative link road, designed to decongest the existing Airport Road, is nearing completion, with authorities announcing the opening of one stretch by the end of this month.

Partial Opening This Month, Full Completion by 2026

According to officials from the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), one side of the new parallel road will become motorable for the public within November. This initial opening aims to provide early relief. The entire project, however, is slated for full completion and operational status by March 31, 2026.

The road stretches from the Bawa White House crossing directly to the Airport Crossing, running parallel to the main thoroughfare. GMADA Chief Administrator Sakhi Sawhney confirmed that the project is being fast-tracked on the directions of the Punjab state government. She stated that while work is almost complete, the focus is on delivering usable sections to the public as soon as possible.

Key Components Awaiting Finish

While most of the road is ready, two critical components remain under construction. These are a double-lane underpass beneath the railway line and a bridge over the N-choe. The proposal for the reinforced concrete box passage required for the railway underpass has been sent to the Indian Railways for approval, and necessary funds have already been allocated.

GMADA's engineering wing has assured that even if the railway approvals experience delays, the completed and motorable stretches of the link road will be opened to traffic within the announced timeframe. This pragmatic approach ensures that commuters can start benefiting from the new infrastructure without waiting for the entire project to be finalized.

A Direct Route for Flyers and Commuters

The new link road promises to transform connectivity to the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport. Currently, passengers traveling from Chandigarh and surrounding areas must take a longer route via Phase 11, the IISER light point, and Airport Chowk.

Once operational, the new road will offer a direct and shorter access, significantly reducing travel time and distance. This is expected to not only ease the journey for airport-bound traffic but also improve overall traffic flow in Mohali by diverting a substantial volume of vehicles away from the congested main Airport Road.

The project represents a crucial upgrade to the region's transport infrastructure, addressing the growing needs of the tri-city area (Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula) and enhancing connectivity for residents and visitors alike.
